I just got back from playing in a small Baptist church. It was a great experince. Some time ago the other guitarplayer from our band and I decided we wanted to go out and do some duo jobs. There are several reasons why we wanted to do this. First of all we both felt God calling us to do this. Secondly it is good to have less people involved, it is less time to set up and so on. We can pack our guitars and a small PA system into a car and we're ready to go. Thirdly a lot of the smaller churches can't afford a band with a crew.
It has been quite some while since we have done this kind of job. We do a 45 minute program playing about 7 or 8 songs and talk about Jesus, faith, lack of faith and grace. The crowd was small, maybe between 40 to 50 people. I think the middle age must have been way over 60. Being used to playing concerts with a paying audience who knows who you are and what to expect, is a treat. Now this bunch was not that easy to charm. They are not used to giving the feedback we get during concerts. They sat through the 45 minutes, most of them not moving an eyelid. When we were done they bursted into spontanious applause. After we were done, they had prepared coffee so we could all sit down together. I think atleast 90% of them came by, shook our hands and blessed us in so many ways with their kind words, gratitude and love.
I just wanna share some of the thoughts i had around this.
1. What may seem like a small event to you, might be the highlight of the
month for someone else.
2. Allthough a crowd isn't good at giving instant feedback they may very
well enjoy what is going on.
3. When the good Lord asks you to do something that may be out of your
"league" in any direction, he has a reason to do so
4. Big blessings may come in small packages.
5. Doing small gigs like this is a good and healthy reminder that people
who show up do so because they want to hear from the Lord, and not
necessarily because they expect fabulous vocals or excelent guitars.
I am sure you guys know most of this already, I just felt the need to share it with ya all.
