Some Background

My wife is the sound tech at our church. Training so far has been trial and error (we have a 32 channel board).

We bought a 16 channel "portable" PA rack system and the store owner gave her a 1 1/2 hour crash course last night. She realizes she has a lot to learn.

Any good Sound tech forums out there? Church sound forums?

She has little time and we don't want to weed through Google results to find the "good" ones.

Appreciate the help!

Try these. I'll state this up-front. Some of participants at these discussion forums are not too tolerant of "newbies" while others will "bend over backwards" to help. There are nationally-known people who post at Audio Asylum. You can see their names on books and trade magazine articles. There are folks at these boards who can refer her to other sources, too. Bill Fitzmaurice, for example, knows alot, has written books on sound reinforcement, and will help. He posts at the Audio Roundtable and Audio Asylum.

Also, I recommend that your wife buy Yamaha's instructional book on Live Sound. I've seen this on-sale at Barnes & Noble, for example. Musicians Friend sells it, too, I believe.

Post any specific questions here. I might be able to help, as well as Reuben Mills. We've both done sound and video stuff at our respective churches.

Also, send me a PM with your e-mail address. I have some basic audio training files which I can send your way. Every piece of information is that much more that she can learn.

And let your wife know she is welcome to post and ask questions here. Hopefully one of us can help. Let her know its not mandatory she plays a guitar, just that she loves Jesus, and has a willing heart for the sound booth!

Yamaha's book is a great one. I have that one myself. And feel free to ask any questions you want right here!

There should be a 12 step support group for Church-sound people.
Nobody will ever be pleased.
You have one boss: the Pastor (or the Worship leader, since it's the Pastor's son, in our case).
You'll definitely need someone to refer to when the well meaning dragons come for you.
Anybody tries to tell me anything (well meaning or not) it sure is nice to be able to just refer them to the Worship Leader! \:D/

"Anybody tries to tell me anything (well meaning or not) it sure is nice to be able to just refer them to the Worship Leader! "

That would be me! I'm the worship leader and she is the sound tech. She volunteered until they could get someone else. 2 years later and she is the paid audio/video tech....

Great!

The biggest problem always seems to be certain individuals with tinitus wanting everything turned down.

Maybe I should have passed out earplugs to them. ;)

Well I do have a singer that always complains the guitar (me) is too loud in the monitor. But, I'm barely hearing myself. Win, lose I guess. We keep plugging away!

Does your sound system have the ability to facilitate multiple monitor mixes? The easiest way to solve stage mix discrepancies is to run two or more dedicated monitor mixes. I have set up our sound system that way and no one has the ability to complain about anything but their own mix.

I agree that sound techs need a full blown nationally recognized support group with a few good books on self esteem to match! ;)

There are plenty of ways to have sound in a church.....
I'm with David---"Play Skillfully With a LOUD Noise!" (PS 33:3). \:D/

Well some people say it's too loud if they can hear the guitar AT ALL...
