Are there any active bassists participating in the forums here? It looks like it has been quite for a while...

Currently, I am playing bass. Not sure if that actually qualifies me to call myself a bassist, though...:dunno::embarassed::wasntme:
Just sayin.

Been on bass for a couple of years again.

Not currently active as a bassist; but that is one of my hats... not "a guitarist who plays bass". been playing bass over 37 years. Scooteraz I bet you are more accomplished than you admit.
Welcome aboard, GA.
Right now, I'm uhh, bass-less. Last one I had was a Beautiful Fender USA American Jazz bass ( I can't recall the specific model but it was pretty special, and not the regular Fender USA Jazz) in natural ash that I sold a few years back. What ya playin', GAbaptist?

I occasionally fill in, though haven't done for some months now. There is now someone else in our fellowship who can sing, and play guitar, bass, drums and keys so he is really useful to have around :-)

Hi gabaptist, and welcome!
I used to be the primary bassist in a fairly large Assembly of God. Choir (with some touring), outreach, youth, retreats, etc. That was more than 10 years ago, though. Before that I did bass in a few small churches and before that a Folk band. God hasn't had me doing that for quite a while, though. Probably because of health issues more than anything else, but I'm doing just fine. Never used tabs. Everything by ear.
I checked out your blog site. Pretty good stuff. I'm sure you'll fit right in here.

Thanks for the replies... It was looking a little dead in here so I didn't know if there were any bass players around.
Crunchyriff... I actually got started playing bass a few years ago because the praise band I was in already had two guitars, and it seemed like everyone else interested in the ministry was a guitar player, so I took up the bass and haven't looked back. I love it! But, unfortunately, my current job has moved me to Alaska and there aren't too many musicians in our little town. I do a lot of "Youtube and CD practice":headphones:
I did start a blog to hopefully be an encouragement to any new P&W bassists to help learn a few songs. You can check the link out in my sig.
I currently play an Ibanez SRA500 which is a great sounding bass for the price. I like playing Contemporary Christian and Praise & Worship, though I do occasionally like to dip into Southern Gospel and Country.
Barry... Thanks for checkin' out the site. If you have any feedback, I'd love to hear it and you're always welcome!
Thanks Guys and I look forward to future "conversations"
God Bless!!

I've been playing bass almost as long as I've played guitar, which is a very, very long time. Currently, I'm the guitarist is a 3-piece retro-rock group and occasionally sit-in on bass with another band I've been associated with for a number of years.

i play bass for our praise team. i actually enjoy it more than guitar. i played guitar for about a year or so, then they asked if i could play bass. i moved over to it and don't plan on going back.

I play quite a bit of bass. I do a lot of blues jams, I host one and I frequent others, I typically supply the bass amp for the backline, and I try to play bass for at least one set at each jam. I enjoy playing bass, I find there is much more freedom than playing guitar, you're not locked into playing things the same way you are on guitar, just don't drop the groove! I'm one of the better bass players at the jams, and from that I was even drafted by a band to fill in on bass when their bass player couldn't make a gig. I play an old 1970's Fender Jazz bass.

I was wondering what happened to gabaptist. He hadn't updated here or his own sites from about March. But I noticed today that his bass site was recently updated.
Guess I thought about this with the old friends thread that stephen started a bit back.
Maybe he will post here again sometime...
Now back to the "are there any bass players here" thread.
For the record, I'm back playing bass. However it is at my temporary congregation in Portland, OR while I am working up here. It is interesting how God finds places for us.
For this group, I have been playing my Ball Family Select MusicMan Stingray 4 Bass through a little Eden EWRG264 bass head and matching 10" speaker cabinet combo. Pretty happening rig for the little space I am playing in.

I play that Jazz bass thru a Peavey Max 115 combo amp, 60 watts, ss. It's an inexpensive amp that is surprisingly good sounding and pretty darn versatile. I auditioned quite a few combo amps before I purchased the Peavey, and it sounded as good or better than some much more expensive amps.
I was a little worried about the power, fearing it didn't have enough to gig with. But I found that is not a problem, there has always been plenty of volume for every blues jam and gig I've used it on; even when the "volume creep" that always occurs at jams results in "too loud" volume situations.
IMO Bass players tend to play too loud anyway, setting the volume floor too high resulting in EVERYONE turning up too much.
Since I bought that Peavey a few years ago there have been several more entries into the market, some of them very attractive. I am really jonesing for one of these Ampeg Micro VR:

200 watts, 2 x 10 cabinet, very small and light weight and easy to transport and carry from the car into the venue. And they sound great.

I use a Yorkville combo when I pretend to play bass :embarassed: and think it sounds TERRIFIC. Also -- they can be found VERY cheap on craigslist, etc. since they aren't as well known for whatever reason...
