Doing what I do with all the spontaneous stuff I always try to record our sets. For years I used a Walkman style Sony Minidisc but there are a lot better formats now available. Well I was in a local Pawn Shop and saw a little Sony Digital Voice recorder in the case and I noticed it had the Red Plug in Power Mic input and was only $20 so---. I snagged it well---.
This thing is a KILLER RIG records in true stereo with the cheap set of ebay Mics I already had been using for my mini disc. It sounds not just good but GREAT and in the highest rez mode I get over 7 HOURS of record time!!
If you are looking for a compact dirt cheap and reliable way to record high quality live performance tracks this is IT!! This rig sounds as good as the hi end $400+ Music recorders I have heard with the built in mics!!
Here are some links to ebay auctions for the recorder and the mics I am using.

Where do you place the recorder during your performances?

I'm interested in something like this for recording our rehearsals.

It depends at my home Church I sit it on the edge of the sound booth. Sometimes I sit int on the front pew or on a window. It's super accurate and super small so wherever I can find in the sound field.
Right now Staples has the non USB version with 2 gig of memory on sale for $29. GREAT sounding little units and the 2 gig model (mine is the older non USB unit with 1 gig ) in the highest fidelity mode will record just over 7 hours of material.

Thanks for this post!

This is something on the wish list, because I want the team to hear themselves, and when we get the occasional gem, we can put it on the website..........

Thanks Richard!
