So...
a while back I decided to make some changes on my two gibsons...
my les paul started out with burstbuckers, I really enjoyed these pickups. But wanted to have something a little more modern sounding and with more clarity. I ended up putting in a seymore duncan jazz in the neck and a JB in the bridge... I really liked this set up except for one thing... they never seemed to be properly balanced in the low end area. and it drove me crazy at times. So I decided to replace the JB with something else. I found a duncan dimebucker online for 52 bucks and free shipping... so I took a chance and bought it... I had bought one of the these a few years back and stuck it into a single pick up guitar I had at the time and really liked it... but I didn't know if it would sound good in my les paul with a jazz in the neck...
I have to tell you I was blown away at how nicely they match each other. perfect balance, and they each sound amazing, separately and together.
I always get compliments on my guitar tone... but for the last three weeks now I've had more comments than ever before...
so it's safe to say that the dimebucker is staying in the lespaul...
and it's funny to watch people's faces when I say it's a dimebucker... they instantly think metal... but this is a great all around pickup, it is hot, and does the metal very nicely, but cleans up nice, and can sound pretty mellow if you use the tone pot and volume... great pickup for rock tone!!!
now my second guitar is a gibson faded V,
that started life as a triple pick up guitar, then had one pick up amputated... lol
when I got it, it had two 490's in it... but I found those very dark, and a little too loose for my liking at the time...
so I put my burstbuckers in it. that seemed to improve it quite a bit... however, this guitar spends 99% of it's time in drop C tuning, (my band does lots of youth events and stuff where we cover TFK, superchick and so forth) and these burstbuckers just were not keeping me happy tuned down like this... so I put the JB into it, with one 490 in the neck...
this was not a good combo...
so I did a little research and found a duncan custom, sh-5 for 45 bucks shipped on ebait... bought it and installed it...
so the V has a 490 in the neck and a sd custom in the bridge now... I played it for a while and was a little dissapointed at first... nicely balanced, but didn't excite me...
so I raised the pick up a few turns with a screw driver and then found the sweet spot... now I'm smiling.
I fiddled with my pedals a bit, this thing is a banshee now... really cool vibe in it... it sounds hot, but a little loose in the bottom. And I'm liking the 490 in the neck with it... however, this is no longer a clean guitar...
but that's ok, nobody expects a V to be played clean anyway...
I think I'll go play "rock you like a hurricane" again... lol
so... I've got a few pick ups for sale now... lol
a jb, and a set of burstbuckers...
