So I have read rave reviews of both... anyone own or have experience w/ this combo? For less than 3 bills, it is certainly a low budget combo.

I am moving in 3 weeks (from Italy back to the states), so I will be without any gear for at least 2 months, possibly more (my stuff will be in transit, hard to take anything on the flight with me) - so I am of course contemplating buying some new gear to play while I am waiting on my household goods to arrive. I really want a Blues Jr and a nice Strat (maybe a Deluxe Powerhouse or Highway 1) or similar.... but i don't know if that is a wise purchase budget wise right now.

I have experience with the Squire 51 and the Vox Valvetronix line.
Everything is great that way.
If the Vox Pathfinder has a good "Vox" type sound: that's the setting I always gravitated to on the Valvetronix.
Plenty of chime, crunch, and "skronk!"

I had the 15w Valvetronix ($179), and the 50w ($349). The 30w is $230. The 30 and 50w have a level control in the back, but I liked the 15w just fine and used it much more often than the 50w, even at home.

The neck on the Squire 51 is to die for! You'll love it.

Another little amp in that price range that I've read great things about is the Roland MicroCube. It's a small modeling amp that purportedly ROCKS!

Another good amp is the Fender 15GR. Plenty loud, and great tones! About the same price rangegive or take a 10 spot.

The best amp under $400 in my opinion is the Crate Palomino. A class A tube amp with great tone.

Wally,
There was a guy at the TDPRI (from Canada) that posted some great playing with his Squire 51. Surprisingly good tone! I was surprised to read that they don't have a tone control, rather a rotary switch and a volume
