View Full Version : Roland cube 20 review
In an effort to reduce the overall stage volume and reduce my load in/out gear times on Sundays. Since I play electric, acoustic, and mandolin. I wanted something I could use for all 3. The overall reduction in stage volume will give the sound guy more latitude getting us in the house, which will make it easier to record. This Sunday we will be facing our amps towards us, tilted up like monitors, the Roland will be miked. I tried it last night at practice using an electric and an acoustic. Pretty neat little amp, I was getting some really cool sounds using a P-90 equipped Tele' using the 'acoustic' setting on the amp; not really acoustic sounding but nice clean and chimey, I added a little verb and chorus to fill it out. The suprise was how nice an acoustic sounded through it. I used the JC clean side w/ a little chorus and delay, (used a Seagull w/ LR Baggs electronics). Wow!, sounded better than a lot of acoustic amps I've played through. Now it doesn't move the air like my 100w Sunn but the lower overall volume on stage was a real nice thing last night, as we could actually lower the overall monitor level as well. Initally, this thing seems to fit the niche, we'll see over time and as we adjust to our new sound configuration. To me it was a no-brainer cause I picked it up used-as new for $100.00.

I played through a Cube 60 a few weeks ago when I was trying out some different amps looking for something a little quieter and was really blown away. I continue to be impressed by how nice these things sound every time I hear one in action. I find the high gain sounds tend to be really fizzy and thin, but if you're looking for clean to some light to medium drive with some verb and delay on them they sound really amazing.

I've bought over 10 cube 30's, I buy them cheap on ebay, and sell them to my guitar students for cost... just so they have something decent to play through...
I also have one in my garage as a back up/stand by for my 212 deville...
the cube series are awesome...
my personal favorite is the blackface setting... with a touch of reverb.
or the classic stack...
I was looking for a 30, but this one jumped up; I'd still grab a 30 if one came up. I do wish they had a direct out though.

eeeeewwwwwww! :)
I'm surprised by how good the Cube 60 sounds. And it does have a 'line out'.
eeeeewwwwwww! :)
Having a line out would be one less mike to worry about.
