I'm currently in the process of finishing up my new pedal board and may have picked up the final piece, although I kind of think I'm nuts...
OK, my main overdrive is a Fulltone OCD at 18v. Wonderful! I also have a modded BD2 which I use for lower gain almost clean lead stuff. I have a modified TS9DX which is OK, although it has a bit more drive than expected. It does work well for those higher gain but ultra smooth kinds of things so I think I'm OK there... The one thing I wanted to add was something to do more gain than the OCD. I was considering something like a modded RAT or variant, but almost by accident came across:
VOX Satchurator. I'm still kind of scratching my head with it... It can really get a lot of "bite" and can go from pretty dark to overly harsh. That being said, it is an easy pedal to dial in and the gain seems to almost be too perfect in terms of where it falls.
I always thought it would be cool to have something like a RAT, but after that initial sense of "WHOA!" from the super raw and cutting tone, I almost feel like it is too "something"... really grainy, just not "nice" although it does bring a sort of RAWK...
Anyway, the Satchurator seems to be able to get pretty close to that super raw tone, but I can back it down a touch to where it just plain smokes... Nice and aggressive, but not overly "raw" or "harsh"... It also somehow seems to be one of the most "transparent" distortions I've ever tried... I'm going to live with it for a bit longer here, but I keep finding myself surprised by how much it seems to "fit" that nitch for me of being a lot more "harsh" and "aggressive" than the OCD without being "harsh" and "aggressive"... ...if that makes sense...
So am I loosing my mind here? Would I be happier with a modded RAT in the long run? I'm somewhat concerned because I've tried/listened to so many clips of different pedals that to some degree I fear that I when I come to my senses, I'll regret this pedal as it is a bit more cash than some of the others... hmmm...
I dunno - I should be happy as I think this pedal will work, I'm just surprised that it seems to fit without so much extra effort or modding on my part... hmmm... Considering the other pedals on my board right now (OCD, BD2, TS9DX) is there something else you would suggest to fill gaps?
Thanks!
