4CM = Four Cable Method... this allows you to incorporate your amps preamp into the signal chain wherever you want. It makes things very very flexible.

So with that method can you do something like put a wah before the preamp and chorus/delay after?

Yep - the signal chain is 100% customizable. You could even have the entire signal chain reversed before the loop if you want... but I would not advise that.

By default the GT8 has the traditional "pre" effects before the preamp and loop, and the "post" effects after the loop. I find that works most of the time.

You can do this for each patch if you want so you have a huge variety of ways to set up.
