View Full Version : How about an Online Open Jam

Okay... I see these things here and there online. Someone builds a cool 4 or 5 minute backing track (high quality) and then several people either take turns improvising for 12 or 24 bars each.
I'm not exactly sure how it is supposed to work (anyone comment please?) but I believe the way the combined jams work is that the master backing track is distributed to each person and they submit their lead segments (the track only I presume) back to someone who combines everything into a final mixdown...
We could do this for some cool traditional hymns or something - spice them up and give plenty of room for each willing party to noodle around...
Any input, ideas, experience anybody??

I've never done it before, but I have the capabilities to build a backing track with drums, bass, and rhythm guitar.
Someone come up with a chord progression.

How about an up-beat arrangement of "Your Love Is Deep"? The chord progression is good for riffing if done in the key of D. My band does it punk rawk style, up tempo, with power chords.
I have three different CD's that are Jam Tracks from GC's Guitar-mageddon. It has various music styles and seems to be free of copyright. I could rip it to MP3. Speaking of styles, what style should this be?

My suggestion... worth 2¢:
Let's go with something with a minor feel... not too fast... but not a ballad. In the middle tempo-wise. As for crunch - perhaps a mellow smooth backing tone. Then whoever wants to jump in can use a high gain or sparkly clean tone (or any inbetween) and it will layer well.
Let's get others' buy-in on it and hear from them too. I know that the Guitarmageddon tracks are top notch quality. We could easily use one of their longer tracks...
Sounds fun!

Sounds good to me!
I'm a regular jammer on the Les Paul and Fender Forums, and it's a blast.

We did one of these over on the Carvin BBS before the meltdown and it was rather interesting to see the different feels and interpretations that came back.It turned out to be a showcase for ideas and sounds like fun!! We posted a backing track on a host site as a MP3 file and then whom ever wanted to give it a spin downloaded the track did there take and posted it.

I have seen some chat rooms that let people take turns playing over the mic to one another. I have never done it, don't really have the setup, but that might be fun? If the forum had a live chat once a week, that would be cool to get together and jam...

I dont know exactly how this is done, cause I've never done it before, but ForumsPlace does offer I beleive for free, iGoChats which is an online chat room, that can be tied to this forum (I think?). Would we need an online chat room?

Stephen,
On the forum jams I've done, an MP3 backing track is first selected. Next, everyone makes a recording of themselves playing with it and posts their rendering somewhere for everyone else to check out. Like on SoundClick.
God bless,

I think a live chat once a week would be great addition to the board.

This is how they do it on the Les Paul Forum. My thought was to actually do something along the lines of a composite jam. I don't know how something like that would work though... keeping the separate lead tracks synchronized would be a nightmare.
If we do something like the LPF, can we agree to make the backing tracks about 2:00-2:30 long? That seems to be a nice length that won't force us to get repetitious. The LPF guys like the 4 and 5 minute stuff a lot... I prefer the shorter stuff.
Anyone have an opinion on that?

I agree.........sometimes on the LPF I shorten the jams, but sometimes it feels good to go the distance.
Shorter jams are generally better.

Any of the above tracks will work for that. Jammers just need to fade them out manually after 2 -3 minutes.
Whatcha think? Restrict songs to 3 min and 0 seconds max?

I took the tracks down in May for lack of interest. Do we want to give this another go? I could put 'em back up.
Let me know,

Sorry! I am pretty busy lately. At some point it would be nice to do this - if there is a "critical mass" of players who'd be into it. I know I brought it up...
Go figure.

Well, this isnt super hi-fi,it isn't a slow minor vibe,or over 1:40....but maybe this can get the ball rolling. :-)
Look for Funk Jam in D.
---I added bass and guitars to a drum track provided by a fellow jammer over at the LPF.You can paste it to be longer.
