View Full Version : Some structural changes a-comin'

We'll be making a few changes very soon in order to simplify and prepare the way for updated technology. Here's a brief list with an approximated timeline:
The portal will be removed (within the next few days)
When this happens, the Classifieds section will be moved back to the forums (like it was a couple of years ago). If you're planning to post a classified soon, please wait for this change.
The "What's Guitarists Praise and Worship Forum all about?" section will also return as a forum section. The forum rules page and so forth has been part of the portal since Oct 2007.
The overall skin will also change slightly in that there will no longer be a side bar. The banner of SAguitar's Tele will also disappear, but only temporarily.
Forum security from spammers, etc, will not change in the slightest. If anything, it will get better.
There will be more changes on the server side over the next month or two or three. Most of it should be transparent to our forum members, but we will be in better shape behind the scenes.
Praise God!
Thanks Barry, for all the effort you put forth.

As long as I don't have to buy a new cable or something... Hehe
I ended up having to buy a $30 cable so that i could plug my camcorder into our new DVR thingy... What a joke... Of course, the helpful sales associates at Best Buy informed me that my video camera is outdated and that I needed to purchase a new camera as soon as possible... When asked what they would suggest (more as a synical joke than anything) the humorously showed me the model I owned. I asked, "What cable would I need to connect this camera to my DVR?" They poked around for a bit and said, "Well, I'm not sure exactly which one it is, but I'm sure we could order it for you..." I asked, "Are you sure this could be connected?" The helpful lady said "Oh yeah, for sure... ...I mean these are the same generation of technology"... I then in a perhaps more frustrated tone than necessary said, "By the way, this is the exact camera that I own..."
She didn't get it...

Uhm... We'll see. We have hundreds of smiley applications in. You know how rough the job market is these days. Our requirements for that position are tough and there's a 4-phase interview process.
We generally notify new hires by mail. :mail:

Which is one reason why I never "talk tech" with sales associates.
BTW, I've found that Best Buy usually marks up cables quite a bit. I go online for that sort of thing.
Did you ever find a cable?
Oh, and you won't need a new cable for the forum. Just a huge monitor. That's all. lol

If you make that a 4-course interview then I'll apply.

Well, things have been moved around. The rules and stuff are near the top of the forum index, the classifieds section is at the bottom of the index, the portal has been taken offline and the default template should be in use by everyone.
2 quick ways to tell if you're using the default temple:
- The guitar banner in the upper right-hand corner of the forum will be missing
- There will be no "sidebar" function
If you're still seeing the banner or sidebar option, I missed something.
Also, would a member please check whether you can post in the classifieds section?
Please let me know here as quickly as possible! I'll be moving on to other items on the list by the end of this week.
Thanks!
Micter

Hey Barry,
I used to use the "portal" as a way of seeing who was logged in/how many people were viewing, etc. Is there some other place I can see that? Not that it matters, it was just interesting to see who was around at a given time...

Don't know. Our CEO hasn't said one way or the other yet. In the meantime, free pizza and soft drinks are being served in the Blue Room! :pizza1: :drinksoda:

The next step is HUGE.
We will be moving the forum to a different server. This will be taking place sometime in the next week or so. Exactly when is unknown, but it won't be on Friday.
When this move happens, there is likely to be a period of several hours where the forum will not be available at all. This will be dependent on several variables, not all of which are within our control, but I'll do my best to minimize downtime as much as possible.
I plan to run an upgrade on the software during that time, too.
It should be an easy process, just a bit time consuming. When it's over, we should be in a better position overall.

Aw shucks, thanks, guys...
UPDATE:
Server move complete!
First, I apologize for the extended downtime.
It ended up being a bit more troublesome than I'd anticipated. Got started around 10-ish this morning and just finished up half an hour ago. With breaks, of course. Our new host's crack tech support team bailed me out of a major hiccup this evening. I was sure this would all have to wait until tomorrow. Great bunch of people!
There should be absolutely no difference with the forum right now than there was yesterday. Except it's geographically located in Washington DC now as opposed to Utah and it might seem to run smoother. If there is, please let me know here.
Next step (sometime soon): software updates and cleanup. That shouldn't take all day.
Time to go spend some time with my wife now..... :hearts:

If we're in DC now, does that mean we're totally corrupt?
Barry
10-03-2009, 04:01 AM
Not necessarily. It could mean the very presence of our 1's and 0's on a server in DC is all the country needs for REAL change.
Uhm... Yeah! That's it!
