Played three songs Sunday with th acoustic. First one went off without a hitch. Threw on the capo for "Holy is Lord" and it too went without a hitch. Took the capo off for " You Never Let Me Go" and it's horribly out of tune. I hit the first chord (A) and my jaw nearly hit the ground. The sound guy caught it right away and dropped me pretty much out of the FOH mix but I could still hear it in my ears.

Never heard such a thing like that before......... Daggonit humidity here in Ohio is off the charts.

Oh well, Sunday was my first service without a single sheet of music. Played all four songs from memory. I was even able to sing quite a bit.

Oh, and I got to listen to last weeks worship where I got to play slide. I actually liked what I heard. I heard one clam but the rest I thought fit right in and........... WOOT

Make sure that:
(A) The nut slots are cut deep enough--------I've seen expensive guitars with this problem
(B) Place the capo as close to the fret as possible

Speaking of capos, has anyone tried one of these rolling capos? My worship leader gave me one about a month ago and I really like it. Works great for changing the capo on the fly.

I use the rolling capo mostly as just something to play with. I'm not happy with it in a live situation. Can't really explain why.

Bummer about that out-of-tune moment there, Hooligan. Humidity, temperature changes... the bane of our existence. Although the use of the capo must have had something to do with it as well. :hmm:

I've got one of the rolling capos. It is pretty sweet and works like a charm. The only thing it DOESN'T do a good job of is when you initially put it on or take it off, a re-tune is necessary. However, once installed, rolling it up a fret or three or whatever works great and stays in tune... I do find it to be a tad bigger and therefore with certain chords, it tends to get in the way of my hand more than something like a schubb or kyser...

Hooligan, the clear answer or solution here is simple:

Get a second acoustic guitar... hehe... Seriously though, if I play a capo at church, I try to find a key where I can play all the songs without changing to avoid the problem... For example, capo 5 instead of 3 so you play in D instead of E may allow you to play the other song in A instead of B on the second song, etc.

Part of it is that even if your guitar is set up perfectly, changes in humidity/temperature/pressure on the neck etc. etc. etc. all influence the tuning of the strings... Unfortunately, the capo splits the string in an uneven way when these variables happen... The strings don't slip evenly under the capo, the pressure applied by the capo is different on each side, the physical amount of the string on either side of the capo is not the same, or what not for a variety of reasons... So, I've always found temp/humidity changes to make a FAR more significant difference when using a capo - mostly when it comes off...

In reality, when I am forced to play where I am switching and WON'T have a chance to tune, I'll try really hard to switch guitars or something...

Another thing that might help is to use "Big Bends Nut Sauce" on the nut grooves. It keeps the strings from sticking in the nut when you tune.
