Depending on the response, this could be a continuing series, so if your favorite gets voted out on the first Forum Special, it could be the next one. (Plus you can always special order one from me at zhangbucker@yahoo.com. I do all custom work.)

We'll decide on the basic type first, decide neck/bridge/middle later. The poll is set up to last a week.

Well, you've satisfied me greatly with all the other winds----can't wait to see what you could do in a mini-bucker!

clang, cluter-clutter, shuffle, shuffle, scuffle

Ah, there it is. Dang crickett's!

I'd love to see the magic you could do with a mini-bucker too.

Okay, it's 3-0 for the mini. (The 1 vote in "other" was mine just so I could see my own poll results.)

We did get one Tele vote though.

Yeah, its like everyone has gone shy on us.

I mean, I can think of at least a dozen here that are opinionated about their tone, there style, and the equipment they use.

I mean guys, this is one of those things where your "BRAINSTORMING" with idea's, and you can actually be a part of the development of a pick-up here!

I mean, how many have sat there and moaned and groaned, "Why didnt Seth do this?", "Why didnt Seymore do that?"

Well, HERE IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY!

GO FOR IT!!!!

I have refrained from chiming in on this because I KNOW I would be compelled to buy a set upon completion... ...and it may very well cost me my marriage... so... long story short, I fully anticipate buying a set of your pickups for a guitar down the road, but will need to see what guitar, etc. that turns out to be when I get there...

Also - when I make a list of what I would most want in a pickup, you pretty much have it covered with other things you have designed. I got turned on to your stuff by Refin (I think it was) and have definitely been "window shopping"... Your stuff looks fantastic!

I want the tele bridge & strat mid neck with coil taps we have been discussing offline. But, I thought that so specialized, that I shouldn't post it here. So, here you go.

My needs are pretty specific and narrow.
I voted humbucker 'cause I really need something warm and jazzy for my Eastman archtop.
I'm sure I'm the Lone Ranger on this one.

I voted for the Big Bucker, because about the only single coil pickups I can tolerate are Kinmans (and technically, they aren't true single coils), and I don't have a guitar I could put a mini-bucker in.

I voted other because I just put a Seymour Duncan SHR -1 in the bridge of my strat and thats the only pickup I have wired in right now!

HAHA> 'Bucker vote for me. I find a lot of interesting a good single coils - but a good bridge bucker is hard to find. Not too powerful, or too weak, not to spikey, nice and fat, but will drive an amp. That's what I want.

I voted once, but we could pretend we're in Chicago and vote a bunch of times!

It could work if you buy one pu per vote...MWA-HA-HA-HA....!

We've got a real horse race between mini and full-size. "Other" is technically in the lead with 4 votes but one of them is mine just so I can see the results and the other "Others" would have to be the same pu but they're not.

C'mon, you Bucker Voters! This unit that Jaybo has described here sounds like a winner to me! I wants me some of that!

From my stable, sounds Brownbucker-ish. (9.2k/roughcast A2) This formula can also be tweaked as necessary.

07-25-2009, 08:27 PM
PS, that's precisely the kind of humbucker I specialize in, hence the slogan "Vintage Tone with Testosterone"...

Anyway, 4 days til the poll closes, we need a tiebreaker between humbucker and mini -- but whoever loses, don't feel bad, I'm thinking you'll be the 2nd Forum pu.

"Vintage Tone with Testosterone"

-That describes it perfectly! Early on I thought you needed a high output pickup to play metal, but when I went to the virtual PAF, I realized how alive the amp came, and all the in between sounds I'd been missing. I had a PRS Dragon in a Swamp Ash strat too, that was almost in the right area too.

I agree with my very good and tone minded brother Lord, and shy of vexing those that dare to disagree with us, just give em a big painful pimple on the end of their nose for a week, that should teach em that, Mini's are Divine......

Amen.

Ok, all joking aside, a serious question.......

I notice that no one really offers a "hot" mini-bucker. Is there a reason for that? I mean, does the sum of the components for a mini-bucker, make it it unfeasible for a high gain output, or is it that the classic style (like you see in the FireBirds and Les Paul Gold Top Deluxe) has so permeated the consensus, that moving away from that formula is an unwritten "No-No"?

OK... ...so I searched the Scriptures on this trying to discern which pickup type would be most Godly... After much prayer and meditation, I discovered a passage... ...Matthew 19:14. It says, "Let the children come unto me... I suppose that “Children” could have been translated “little ones”... so that would make the verse:

Let the “little ones” come unto me... so I guess that would be mini-buckers...

So... I’ll vote for those... ...because that is what the Bible teaches (or not but hey...)

(In all sincerity, I think it would be cool to have something in a mini-bucker package that sounded awesome... AND, because I care about Stephen, I wanted to help swing this in his favor...)

Yeah, but now it just looks like blatant sucking up. You should have said, "I had this uncontrollable urge to vote for the mini-bucker, so I did. It was almost like a Jedi mind control thing....."

Now that woulda scored ya big points!

DiMarzio makes one. I have a pair in my Deluxe. They're okay, I guess, but I really want to try something different. I have no doubt that Zhang could slaughter them. To me, the DiMarzio's really don't sound very good clean; they have none of the sparkle that the (now horribly microphonic) original mini's had.

How about a mini wound to match the delicious Paul Bunyan tele bridge wind you do?:hungry:

Zhangliqun
07-28-2009, 12:28 AM
Refin, that was the original purpose of the Mini-PAF. As for whether hot mini's can be made, the answer is yes, and I can do them too. The bobbins are smaller so they won't hold as much wire, but a narrower (43) gauge can make up for that to a large extent.

I can also make the bobbins taller by cutting them in half vertically and gluing them back together with a styrene strip in between, which would allow for a somewhat beefier 42 gauge pu. It depends on how hot "hot" is to the contestants here.

But all that's still premature -- let's see how the poll ends up. That said, the one thoroughly arbitrary and unfair decision I have reached so far is that if the mini wins, it will be the Mini-PAF and not the Deluxe style.

MrMike
07-28-2009, 01:54 AM
But will it fit in a Deluxe?

Zhangliqun
07-28-2009, 05:07 PM
Yes, it will fit in a Deluxe. You might have to widen the mount screw holes in your surround because the mini-plates I have take a larger screw, but it will fit just fine.

Okay, I'm all for the Mini as well, even though I'm not shopping for pups and only have Strats right now. It looks like the Mini might be the overall winner for the forum.

But I wanted to bump this question in case you missed it:

would you build bass pickups, too?
