Seeing as the price of 1985 and older Fender amps is going through the roof, I bought an ultralinear 1978 Pro Reverb for $400. It's electronically all original, including the Fender branded tubes and speakers. A previous owner changed the original grillcloth to some plain black stuff.

A few blackface mods later, the amp sings sweetly. The original speakers are CTS and sound dull. I swapped in some Eminence twelves and they sound great but the amp weighs a ton. Research shows the Jensen C12N to be the idea replacement speaker.

Does anyone have suggestion for another speaker? Preferably one that is light weight but will still give me a Twin Reverb/classic Fender tone.

Thanks,

Gary

A different amp, but might be related. I had a modern Blues Deluxe in tweed. Just for grins, I connected a Jensen C12N to it. It sounded awesome in the Blues Jr., but sounded totally weird in the Blues Deluxe. Of coarse, the power rating was not proper for that speaker. But it was an articulation anomoly that was so weird.

My point is, that you just need to get access to one and test it before you commit to buying it, if possible. In the end, it is what is good for your ears.

Check this out: https://weberspeakerscom.secure.powweb.com/weber/

I'm in love with Ted's AlNiCo Blue Dogs, have two Fender Tonemaster cabs loaded with 'em.

The blue dogs will add some Brit flavor, but Ted's 12F150 (C12N) is a fabulous speaker. For that amp I'd get the 50 watt version. I a/b a '65 Deluxe Reverb with the original Jensen C12N against Ted's 12F150 and except for the "newness" all the tone was right there. Fantastic speaker.

Thanks, guys. The 2005 Fender catalog shows a Pro Reverb RI (yeah, right) and it's loaded with a C12N Jensen. The Webers would cost me twice as much as the Jensens. I guess I forgot to mention that my top concerns are (1) Money and (2) weight.
