This may not be news to most of you, but I was pleasantly surprised to find several new CD's of hymns on my recent trip back to the states (being stationed overseas has made it harder to keep up with whats going on in the CCM world).
Jars of Clay - Redemption Songs I thought Jars of Clay's last CD, "Who We Are Instead" was their best so far, and one of the best releases of the last couple of years, so I was pleasantly surprised to find this just released new CD... and even more pleasantly surprised to find that it is a compilation of re-worked hymns, many using the arrangements from the Reformed University Fellowship/Indelible Grace project. A solid CD well worth a listen if you like the band and hymns. My new signature is from the liner notes. Tracks:
1. God Be Merciful to Me (Psalm 51)
2. I Need Thee Every Hour
3. God Will Lift Up Your Head
4. I'll Fly Away
5. Nothing But the Blood
6. Let Us Love and Sing and Wonder
7. O Come and Mourn With Me Awhile (Our Lord Is Crucified)
8. Hiding Place
9. Jesus, I Lift My Eyes
10. It Is Well With My Soul
11. On Jordan's Stormy Banks I Stand
12. Thou Lovely Source of True Delight
13. They'll Know We Are Christians by Our Love
Ashley Cleveland - Men and Angels Say Another disc of hymns, some with new arrangements. Just released a couple months ago. Steve Winwood makes a surprise appearance on Hammond and vocals on "I Need Thee Every Hour". Again, worth a listen if you like Ashley Cleveland's vocal style. Tracks:
1. Come Ye Sinners
2. Surely Goodness and Mercy
3. Nothing But the Blood
4. Power in the Blood
5. Christ the Lord is Risen Today
6. I Need Thee Every Hour
7. All Creatures of Our God and King
8. It Is Well With My Soul
9. Precious Lord Take My Hand
10. Holy Holy Holy
11. Come Thou Fount
12. What A Friend We Have in Jesus
Passion - Hymns Ancient and Modern Features Chris Tomlin, David Crowder Band, Charlie Hall, Christy Nockels, and Matt Redman. This CD was released over a year ago, and is enhanced - it includes the chords and overheads (gotta buy the book if you want piano music). This one didn't make as much of an impact on me as the other two CD's above, but I have only had the opportunity to listen to it a couple of times. Tracks:
1. O Worship the King - Chris Tomlin
2. Doxology - David Crowder Band
3. Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee
4. Praise to the Lord, The Almighty - Christy Nockels
5. Father Let Me Dedicate - Matt Redman
6. How Great Thou Art
7. Raise Up the Crown (All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name) - Chris Tomlin
8. All Creatures of Our God and King - David Crowder Band
9. Solid Rock (On Christ the Solid Rock)
10. Phos Hilaron (Hail Gladdening Light) - Passion Worship Band
11. Joyous Light (Hail Gladdening Light - Revised) - Chris Tomlin
12. Here Is Love - Matt Redman
13. Fairest Lord Jesus - Christy Nockels
14. Take My Life (And Let It Be) - Chris Tomlin
I don't know if three releases constitutes a trend, but it was a nice surprise to me to find them. I really like the Jars of Clay and Ashley Cleveland CD's. The Passion CD hasn't made as much of an impact - It may be that the arrangements change the hymns too much.
