Youse guys probably already know this but Rick Derringer is performing and recording as a Christian artist.
I checked out the tunes on his website.
He can still play!
"Read the Word, Live it Too" is new words to the music of Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo.
Lyric rewrites are not my favoite thing but I sure wish him the best and am glad to see him out there speading the Word.

Rick is a 100% stand-up Christian bro; and he still kicks MAXIMUM butt on guitar. What an incredible player.

I agree CR,
Didn't sound like he has lost his edge one little bit.

I believe that when Rick "goes up", he still will be "on top of his game".

WHOA! RD is a brother! WOOOOO-HOOOOO! He's one of my guitar influences while I was growing up! I wore out his Rick Derringer Live album. Played it sooo much, it became useless! Completely wore the grooves out of it! One of the best live performances I ever heard!

I have seen RD a couple of times in recent years. Jimmy Wallace invites him to play at the Dallas Guitar Shows. I have also met him in his booth at the Dallas and the Arlington shows.
I agree, he is a phenominal player. He knows just about every lick there is. AND, he can play them flawlessly at 5 times the speed of most people.
On the other side, it is easy to see why he is not in mainstream "Clear Channel" radio programming. Though his stuff seems super-human to us guitarists, there is not much commercial listening material for the masses with that type of playing style.
EDITED: XXXXXXX
I have been a big fan of RD since probably 1974. I love his song "Jump, Jump, Jump". Not a very possitive song, nor does it showcase his playing. But the feel of that song is right up my alley.
He plays a PRS and his own brand guitars mostly these days. His brand has a big scripted "R" on the headstock.
I will probably see him in a couple of weeks. Is there anything that you want me to tell him? :ROFL

That's a fine-line, innit, Reverbb? Certainly unfortunate to hear. Only God knows what's goin on in his head. Man it's tough. Though I have never achieved the level of stardom that Derringer did, I've been in the spotlight at the pro level, and it indeed is a strange place to be. It's not very 'comfortable', in many, many aspects. It's certainly no excuse to be a weinie; but that being said, you have to deal with so many psychological hi-jinks with fans, groupies (gag) hangers-on and what-not that you have to somehow 'have your guard up' a bit just to keep your sanity and focus on reality. THAT can be a difficult trick to pull off for anyone and keep a smooth, relaxed & open demeanor with the public. You either learn to adapt adeptly, or you fight it, squirm and come off "wrong"...unless of course you are REALLY being a weinie!! Sometimes you have good days with this, and some days you are a chump.
I hear Steve Morse is 'cracker' amongst his fans- he's not comfortable in public offstage...especially when you are telling him how much you dug his playing on "so and so". Last guy I know that did that, Steve just gave him a cryptic, cold, stern stare...and walked off.
Methinks some social skills training should be mandatory here, eh?

Uh, you mean the old BCRich's with a big R on the headstock? I used to have a BCRich Mockingbird with a big R on the headstock. It did have a small B on the left, and small C on the right of that big ole R. I got that mockingbird cuz of Rick!

Hmm. I see a pattern here. I met Dan Foglberg behind stage at the Majestic Theater in Dallas. He had a similar demeanor. I have heard that he is VERY uncomfortable with meeting the "fans".
Your explantion helps me put it into perspective a little more. I know several local musicians that have a "name" for themselves. And they tend to follow a similar trait.

Most of those imho, have what I term have the "Mr Wunnerful Syndrome" and it's generally about ego. 99% of the time... I mean, let's face it, lead guitarists and singers (and I happen to be both...lookout!) usually have the most well-deserved BAD reps, and for good reason:
they think their offal comes out in pre-packaged baggies, and smells like lilacs; and the whole would should feel blessed to, uhh, have the HONOR of their presence; (nothing chaps my fanny faster than these types)....
and unfortunately, once when and IF they get past the LOCAL level & they already have the penchant for said mindset, it's just like throwing gasoline on a flame...

I've met and jammed with Jackson Browne. As regular a guy as you'll ever meet.
I thought the work Rick Derringer did on "Tobacco Road" (Edger & Johnny Winters), was awesome!
"I'm So Glad (to be livin' in the USA)" was a stellar piece of guitarmanship.
Never knew he became a Christian.
I'd like to see him, Mike Deasy, and Phil Keaggy, tearin' it up. THAT would be a show!

I have heard the same thing about Jackson, too; though I have never had the pleasure of meeting or Jamming with him. Very cool.

I got to meet Rik Emmett from Triumph once. Very laid back, personable and just plain enjoyable guy. I once stood at a urinal next to Dizzy Gillespie; discretion prevailed and I didn't attempt to engage him in a conversation. :ROFL
I met Tommy Castro several years ago, and Dave Hole (Aussie slide man) and Kim Simmonds (Savoy Brown) last year and they were all perfectly nice guys. Just got lucky.

Ex lead singer and current guitar freakazoid here... I never could figure out the baggy/lilac thing. But I was a bonafide jerk and played the ego card for the attention just like all my contemporaries - just ask my wife sometime. She was with me through the whole thing... Thanks to the blood of Christ and her patience, I'm not the man I was (nor the person I "thought" I was!).
I have to tell you, God gave me an amazing woman for a wife - I couldn't have asked for a better match. She teh r0xx0r. :angel

The live Derringer album was mentioned too (good one,Stephen!)---that was a great album also.Wasn't Rick pictured with a strat ? I seem to remember a TV model LP Special also, maybe the other guitarist?

OK. Just got back from the Dallas Guitar Show. I made it a point to get my picture taken with Rick. BTW, his signature guitar is with Warrior Guitars, not BC Rich.
I made light of the fact that I was supposed to ask him something, but I could not remember what.

Speaking of Dan Fogelberg, I wonder how his battle with prostrate cancer is going... there has been practically no news since it was announced last fall. I hope he is beating it.

Last year, the guitar that he was promoting had a big script "R" (which I assumed stood for "Rick"). I don't know what the BC Rich script "R" looks like. But his signature guitar this year looked like it had a standard Warrior logo.
Frankly, I was a bit distracted. I didn't want to come off as a "hanger-on-er" (as I saw someone referred too), so I just played it really cool and didn't dive into details much. I was busy trying to get his eye contact while two other folks were standing around, so I did not focus in on his signature guitar too much.
What did I ask him? I asked him if he lived in Texas. He replied, "No, I am living in Florida". Then, I asked him about the relationship with Edgar Winter back in the '70s. He responded, "Yeah, I produced all of his good albums".
I should have invited him to this forum  .

Sorry, no new news. I would suspect that his life is even more private at this point. It is not everyday news if he is having side effects from his treatments or that he went to the doctor three times this month. We can only pray for his healing at this point.
My current wife has become a huge fan since I introduced his music to her back in the 1980s. I knew of his music from my first wife in the mid-70s. My wife even went as far as suggesting that I buy his Signature Martin. Then, I told her how much it was. She VERY quickly backed down.
This is perhaps the most up to date public information that you are gong to find (other than some tabliod speculations):
