We should not attach photos but, do you have a link to photos of you and your guitar?

Here's a few recent shots of me & my Tele during worship at church.

Funny, I always that you had a head. I never realized that your were a headless guitar player

I don't have any recent pics of me playing guitar that I am aware of. I think a friend took several pics of me playing keyboards at a blues jam recently though. If I find any, then I will post.

As far as posting pictures, I don't think that showing the picture on the thread uses any more storage as posting the cryptic link. The Img tag only points to a picture that is stored somewhere else on the Internet.

The forum is set up to where we can only link to photo's. If it was a premium (paying) site, they would afford us space for photo's. It's covered in the FAQ's

I like to think of them as my "Steinberger" photos.

Perhaps the "Unknown Guitarist."? I dunno. They were shooting for some generic ministry action shots.

Really, it's IS me. Honest! <hangs head> Truly, truly!!

Never knew eatin my words would be so tasty! NOT! So Reverbbb, ya just had to go and show everyone how pathetic of a webamster I am huh? heck, its not really too hard to do that!

I had the impression that we couldnt post pics, and obviously, I was very wrong.

Thanks for showing us we can post pictures Roger!

edit: I'm leaving the original context of this post in italics, as a demonstration, and to make sure things are clear.

After a discussion with my great buddy/friend/brother in Christ, Roger (reverbbb), I was concerned that this might be percieved as I was bustin his chops. No, definitely not! Sadly, it was just my lame excuse at attempting some humor, and beleive it or not, I was tryin to poke some fun at myself, for not being the most literate, when it comes to runnin this website. Roger is one of my best friends, even though we have never met face to face. He has been, and always will be a brother that is so close to me, it brings a huge grin to my face, every time I think about him.

It really does bug me, that because I may have been un-intentionally insensitive, that I may have wounded my brother like this. Roger, as I said in a pm to you in private, I also say openly in public, I am so very sorry. Please forgive me. You know I love you, and care deeply about you.

The reason why I wanted to leave this on is for all of us to have an example: We need to be carful in what we say/type, cause we do not want to offend eachother, and especailly, we dont want to offend those that dont know Jesus.

If my lapse in attentiveness has bothered anyone else regarding this thread, I again, sincerely apologize to you also. So far we have had a great run here, and no flame-war eruptions to date. But, I can see, that with an unintentional post, like the one I just did, could lead to feelings being hurt, and foster an attitude of retaliation. We dont want that here.

So, lets all walk in awareness, kindness, forgiveness and Love.

Again, I apologize to all, and especailly, my brother Roger.

OK WMPC (WebMaster PraiseCaster).

Now that we have hi-jacked this great thread of Pearly Gator, let me just go on public record that I was not offended in ANY form by your post. There is no need to apologize for ANYTHING. I was really just trying to down play that self apathy in your respose. I "got it". I was just hoping that everyone else "gets it" like I did. Some folks may not be as aware of your fun-filled antics as I am.

I REALLY did not want to make you look like what you said you are "pathetic . . . webmaster". OH NO!! Far from it. This is a jewel of a forum and you just need to continue being the great webmaster that you have become. Though I know you were just joking, it was a little awkward to see you down-play your abilities. You did not have to eat your words. Perhaps it was me that needed to be more tactful :? .

So, go on now. Don't take me so serious fro now on  .

My number 2 and 6 favorite things:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v328/PraiseCaster/Praisecaster_and_wife.jpg

That is my beautiful Wife Anna, and my Squier Tele. the pickgaurd on it, was made by my oldest son (favorite thing number 3), and given to me on this past fathers day. It's made out of Zebra wood, and the photo does not do it justice.

Real soon here, I'm puttin a vintage style, string thru bridge, with 3 compensated brass saddles. And once my son finishes building it, I'm putting a nice U-shape neck on it too! And a friend designed a headstock decal (in Fender script) that say's "PraiseCaster! a Squier by Elisha Martin". Its gonna be cool when its done!

Well, I just ordered one of these from American Musical Supply:

http://www.americanmusical.com/images/h/p819h.jpg

I was about to buy a black one anyway, then they dropped the price by $60. I had a feeling I better order if I wanted it, and sure enough, it's not listed on the site now. I guess I got the last one, hopefully no issues - I would hate to have to send it back....

edit webmaster: I had to convert the picture in this post to a link, cause the picture was a lil to big, and taking a while to load. As a suggestion for all (including me!), try to resize down to 400x360, or 360x360. photobucket (a free photo hosting website) allows you to reduce sizes.

OK, here is the before picture. The year was 1978 and I was playing my Les Paul Black Beauty w/nickel hardware. I cannot find any pictures of my 1970? 100W Marshall and basketweave 4x12 (A) cabinet. But that was what I was playing on that particular night. The amp that you see in this picture was the bass player's Fender.

Anyone else have a "this is my first guitar" picture?

PG

Sadly, all the photo's of me in my youth, are pretty much gone. At least most of the ones during my drug infested, lascivious lifestyle-ways days.

When I really picked up the guitar and got serious with it, I was at an all time low: I had (at age 16) just endured my 3rd major knee operation (football: thats another long-winded story), and since I couldnt do anything else, I started playing guitar more seriously. Unfortunately, the crowd I started running with (guitarists), lived a less than choir-boy life style, and I dove into it, head first, and with gusto.

When I came back to the Lord, I was convinced by a, "then beleiver" (he was "puffed up" in his mind, and eventually felt that Christianity was beneath him, intellectually. went on to become a "philosophy teacher in college), that I had to do a "cleansing" of my life, and destroy all that devil induced memorobilia. All my demo tapes (8 and 24 track "studio" tapes: 1" & 2" reels, not to mention all the cassette copies), my entire album collection ( I had at least 5000 1st issue release albums, in pristine shape), guitars (except for one CF Sigma acoustic), amps (2 marshall half stacks), and a lot of other stuff. Either it was smashed, torn, or burned, but most definitely, nothing was salvagable. I know what your thinking: Why didnt you at least sell the stuff!? Because the lil mislead group of beleivers I was a part of, and me, all thought that if we sold this stuff, it would bee like "Judas money", and that would be evil, and we didnt want any part of that.  What can I say, young and dumb I guess.

So unless my old buddy Gilby goes digging through his pile of "memory-lane" junk (Highly doubtful), there wont be any pictures of me at about 5' 8", 140 cocaine pounds thin, wearin balck and white checker board clogs, hot pink Sasson Jeans (that look like they were air-brushed on), red and black Japanese kimono top, bracelets and rings, lions main hair with two pink stripes down the middle, ear-rings in both ears, and playing either a Jazz bass, Gibson LP Custom, or classic, or standard, or ES330, or 59LPJr, while standing infront of a wall of amplifiers. Hey, remember, I grew up "in" the mid-70's/early 80's playing on the Hollywierd scene, with groups like Ratt, Motley Crue, Oingo boingo, Missing Persons, the New York Dolls, Quiet Riot, Dohken, EVH, etc.. So I pretty much fit in then.

My wife thought my style was a little strange when she met me (first didnt know wheter or not I was a guy, or a girl, or gay), and I had toned it down a lot: I had stopped wearin all the make-up, let the hair color grow out, and only a few earings. !

So there's a word-picture for you all!

LeStrat,

That's the first time I've seen a Parker Fly, set up with a strat pup configuration! how does she sound?
Stephen,
She is a Nitefly, from the first year they made them ($1300 versus $2500 for a Fly Deluxe). The same neck as a Fly, but bolt-on. Passive Dimarzio designed pups. Lots of strat tones, but GREAT tonal variety. And the best tone control I've ever heard on a guitar (you know, like on a Strat: it could be an on-off switch for all the knob does). It really has a good variety of tones throughout the roll of the tone knob.
Best of all, it has Fishman transducers in the bridge. I can go from electric to acoustic with the flip of a switch. I find it to be the ultimate worship guitar, IMHO.

BTW, the Nitefly changed in the following year to active electronics and a humbucker in the bridge.

That instrument is one of many testimonies I have regarding my instruments: I attended an invitation only clearance sale at a local merchant's shop, due to my association with them through my church. I was the lay-music minister at the time, and we had purchased alot of equipment from them. It was a cash only sale. They said, "you have to look at this guitar." I had seen it before, but they offered it to me for less than 50% of retail. I had no money. The manager asked what it would take. I said again, "I have no money." He said, "what if I give you interest free credit for 90 days, would that work for you?" After I called my better half, I made the deal. I got an income tax refund about a month later and paid it off. God is Good!!!

Mmm NiteFly, Fly... a little funky lookin' - but man, are they versatile. Lots of fun. I have jammed with a coworker who had a black Fly with a graphite fretboard (???). Slick as a whip.

Way too pricey brand new IMHO... but hey - I am the sub-$1000 consumer... especially when I'm not making my living from this.

PVTele

The only guitar, these days, that could possibly wean me off a Telecaster! I actually prefer the sound of a Nitefly to the more expensive 'plain' Fly - the bolt-on neck adds something. Like an Epiphone bolt-on SG sings in a way the more expensive Gibson original never does.

I'd be torn between the HSS swamp ash Nitefly-SA (I fancy the transparent red one) and the HH/coil tap Nitefly-M - something about the sound of mahogany...

But the price is something else - and they're actually really difficult to come by, as well as horribly expensive, here in the UK. UK Recommended Retail Price £ 1299.00 inc. VAT for the -SA, £100 less for the -M... ouch!

Guitar Aid, anyone?

Oh well, if the Lord wants me to praise him on a Nitefly, I guess he'll have to do for me what he did for Les - then I might actually take the plunge!

Reverbbb- I jumped on that invitation like ducks on junebugs! Yessir!

Thanks guys for the kudos on the R8. I have had the blessing of having MANY fine tools over my 30 years of playing, but this R8 far surpasses them all. It is an '01 model. Not sure if it's officially honey-burst or not- I think it's butterscotch burst- but it's not one of the many monochrome looking versions out there. Either way, the sound is why I bought it. I wanted a '57 GT after MANY years of having 'beautiful wood'...I wanted something 'different'; but this guitar put to shame all the other historics I tried.

So I bought it! (grin!)

I was looking through old pix of guitars I've owned and I found this one. I know a lot of guys like PRS. I've owned 3 and though I'm not a big PRS fan, this was the best of the lot. It's an '88 Employee one-off model. Note the creme bobbin pups. They are NOT DiMarzios but actual original PRS B&T pups custom made for the git. It had a nice thick neck and played excellently but just didn't excite me tone-wise. I'm sure a lot of you guys would have enjoyed it much more than I did.

Nick- there's something about the older PRSi- I mean pre- '90 specimens. For some reason, they, to my ears, are the best sounding ones in general.

I have no idea as to WHY, nor do I wish it to be this way- but it seems to be so.

The Ebony fretboard would work for me with certain pickups and body woods, since they tend to be kind of spanky, if you know what I mean. I'd have a tough time using Ebony with single coils or a high opt HB. But they're great on a slightly darker guitar w/ warm rounder sounding HBs.

Nick- there is one thing that I AM aware of regarding difference in older vs newer PRSi- and that is the trem bridge assy. The original trem sounded great. The newer one looks the same, (when it is installed) but is NOT constructed the same way, nor is it made by the same company that PRS outsourced to build them.

I don't see eye-to-eye on just about anything a certain Ed Roman says; but on this point alone I whole-heartedly agree with him. They are two different sounding bridges; and this may atrribute to part of the phenomena we hear (or don't hear...).

That being said, I don't like the sound of the newer non-trem PRSi, either.

There is, however, a certain PRS pickup that stands alone as getting raves from many non-PRS players, and I think it's called the "Deep Dish". I really want to try one of these.

Nickcha
12-19-2004, 11:38 PM
Crunchy,

I wasn't aware of the changed bridge, but that certainly could explain the difference.

Not to knock PRS or PRS users - they are very fine guitars. But I like to use a guitar that starts me off with great woody tone without having to depend so heavily on pedals to shape up the sound. A pedal can never put back into a guitar what only a nice sonicly complex guitar can produce.

I always thought of the PRS as the guiatrist's equivolent to the keyboardist's nice 88 key controller: a fretboard and pups with the outboard electronics adding all the tone. I think it's a bad way to approach guitar playing IF great tone is important to you.

That said, some players like the "controller" approach to guitar playing; i.e. modeler users, etc. And there's certainly an appeal there. But for those in the "Tone" stream of guitar playing, you HAVE to start with a guitar that sounds like a harp-fallen-from-Heaven. Then it's on to the best sonicly complex, dynamicly responsive, tube amp you can find for your taste (Fender, VOX Marshall, etc).

So as you pointed out, PRS Custom 24s typically give you lots of fretboard slapped onto thin pretty bodies with hot pups. Great as a controller. Not so great as a tone generator. That's why thrash players liked them...there's no tone involved, just flame.

Nick, To a large extent, I wouldn't disagree.

In all fairness, as you know, the PRS was basically Pauls' idea to integrate the best aspects of LesPauls and Strats into one axe for those players who usually did their gigs with both said guitars- so they wouldn't have to switch between them back and forth...you know just using one axe. Though the argument could go on forever about how well this was actually accomplished, the "form" fit the "function"; and in doing so, the "hybrid" was developed having a 'tone' all it's own...for better or for worse. You know what they say about "compromise"; and many were made to get this guitar built.

What puzzles me is, why did Paul end up with his production guitars being somewhat thinner in body depth than his original prototypes? Was it to combat the woes of the average Norlin-era Les Pauls that weighed a ton?
Possibly. Maybe even probably. And here, I believe is where the sacrifice in tone lies. (as you alluded to) Desgining a great guitar for the working musician that a guy has to wear for 3 or 4 hrs a night very well may have been a big consideration.

OTOH, there are great, organic sounding PRSi out there. They may be few, but they are out there. I've got one of them, and I have never found it's equal among all the PRSi I've tried over the last 16 years.

This is not to say they equal the sonic footprint of a good LesPaul (my '58 TROUNCES it), but it's NOT a LP or a Strat. It is what it is.

IMHO, they do have their place, and their general sonic signature works very well in the studio. It's very easy to get their place in the mix (even without effects) right, without those piddly little issues at the console that sometimes crop up.

In all this, I started with Gibson, and ended up back with them... Much to my chagrin.

Hi I'm new here...was on a forum with Kewlpack and he gave the link to this forum...looked around and it seemed like a good place to hang out. My name is Jonathan. I'm in my mid-30's, married for 5 1/2 years with a 2 year-old daughter. One reason I married a little later is that I spent 6 years teaching school in Zambia with a church related development agency. Saw Nikchka's pics...looked like Nigeria from the names, is that right? and it reminded me a lot of my home in the early and mid 90's.

Back then all I had was a Sigma acoustic. Today I've got a slightly larger collection of gear (though still quite modest compared to some I've seen here). Anyway, I've got a page on my web-site with pics of my gear. Here's the link (and be sure to check out that late 60's super cool basement carpet in the background!! :D )

http://personal.cfw.com/~jjtieszn/Gear/Gear.html

I played in a rock cover band for a few years...all Christian guys...we chose our covers carefully and then played some originals that reflected our personal faith. However, we disbanded a little over a year ago, though I still get together with the lead guitarist to jam semi regularly. Here's a link to some photos on the band's website:

http://cobaltblueband.com/?Page=7

Don't have a praise band at church, though we do throw something together on the rare occasion that I've played in before. And occasionally I will play my acoustic for offertory...in fact, I will this coming Sunday. Usually end up playing some Bruce Cockburn instrumental...he's one of my faves.

Anyway, I'm glad to be here!

Jonathan

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it is because you are linking to an ASP page that uses a querystring versus linking directly to the image.

Example:
you are linking to: http://photos.ar15.com/WS_Content/ImageGallery/Attachments/DownloadAttach.asp?sAccountUnq=30558&iGalleryUnq=1174&iImageUnq=35252 - this isn't a direct link. It is a link to an ASP page that is going out and getting the image.

You want to link like this:
http://mywebsite.com/myimage.jpg

That is the difference I see. That would explain the break.

It's weird.. It's definately got some flame, but the bottom part looks almost quilted. I didn't think it had enough flame to be a "10 Top," so I got a very good deal on it. Of all the PRSs I played when looking for it, it had the best sound and feel by a significant margin.

I also can't talk about this guitar without mentioning how wonderful my wife is. We picked it out on our Valentine's getaway to Austin.

Tom,

Try and figure why Gibson does the things they do, but my '03 R7 has the dark back and Braz brd (like a real '57), but not the "Authentic" detailing. You would think they would have made your model with the dark back and Braz. brd.

Interesting about that "Stinger" model. I'm far from an expert, but I remember that some of the 50s LPs had that black painted rear headstock that tapered to a point just past the volute. Here's a pic of my friend's (real) '59 Burst. I didn't capture the taper in the pic but it's just as I described.

Nice picture Nick, was that from one of your amp shootouts? I've ready with some humor about how Gibson has made the historic reissues "more accurate" on occasion. I try not to be swamped by the trivia of it all. I've not seen any dark backs, though I'd bet they look nice. I'll probably never see a real 50's LP, so the RI is the next best thing.

Tom,

Yes, that is Glen Kuykendall's '59 Burst from last year's ToneFest.

Believe me, I'm happy with my Historic. However, I have a friend in the UK who's in touch w/ an old luthier over there who does wonderful '59 Burst replicas. The really cool part is that the guy has a store of old 40+ year old Brazillian, Honduran and other old woods; and he's supposed to be a master with Nitro and painting. Anyway, my friend's having a couple built and sending one over to me to check out. It'll likely be later this year, but I'm pretty excited about the prospect.

Under 8 lbs. of pure bliss........guitar was given to me by my mom right before she passed away from cancer in '91.This was originally one of the last goldtop/P90 Lesters of '57.Has 2 Wolfetone rewinds in it,and they are the real stuff-----lotsa character and complexity.

Refin! Do you know Wolfe! I've chatted with him many times on another forum, and have emailed back and forth with him some, too. Awesome dude, and dedicated to the pursuit of Tone!

Here's a link to my little home page, with pics of some of my axes...

http://www.geekoasis.com/members/saguitar/index.html

Sorry about the late response,I just now read this page!
I don't know Wolfe except by phone and email.....he rewound a Gibson pup out of a 335 dot neck reissue and an old Duncan '59.He has also rewound a '62 Jazzmaster pickup for a repair I did.
He is a super guy who loves what he is doing, and is very good at it.He told me about a set he wound called Legend that is supposed to be a real paf smokin' tone. The pups he wound for my '57 have some serious air and tone.I'm going to send him a couple of tele pups to "Broadcaster plus" for me.
Man,you have some really nice axes! Every tone needed is covered!

No, this is a Standard.

It was introduced in late 2003 as a 2004 model basically. The Guitar Center had a new store grand opening in Manhattan. So, GC got the first 275 (representing the 275th store opening I think) production models to celebrate this opening in September of 2003 (or so I think the story goes). Mine is marked 58/275. The Manhattan Blueburst is a limited color. However, it seems that Gibson still makes the same color but not in the blueburst. There are two other colors offered in this line as well.

The actual name of this guitar is Les Paul Standard Limited Edition in Manhattan Blueburst. Man, that is a mouth full. I would just assume call it a blue Les Paul.

Notice that it has the ES-335 style crown inlay on the headstock instead of the plain that you see on most Standards. Les Paul Customs have the split diamond. This guitar comes with the Burstbucker Pros. Many folks don't like these pups, but I do. The smaller tuning pegs bothered me at first. But now I am well adapted to the look and feel of them. This is truely a limited and unique model.

This guitar is serving God and me well. I just might play it this Sunday as a matter of fact. :angel

I just sold this Eric Clapton Strat yesterday. It was my favorite looking guitar that I recently owned, but I did not care too much for the TBX boost circuit. It was OK, but I am not into that sound. I kept finding myself copying EC's licks so that I could sound like him. I didn't want that either  .

I customized this guitar with the coolest parts. I took out the Gold Lace Sensors and installed Lace Chrome Domes. I then installed chrome dome Telecaster knobs and I found a '50s ashtray (tremolo cover). Bought a Fender 8 hole Moto Pearloid pickguard (those are very hard to locate) and a chrome tip switch. When I met Mr. Levy of Levy straps this past summer, he sold me a really nice silver "irradescent" strap that matched the guitar perfectly.

I netted about $175 profit in the deal. Now it's gone

Let's get back to the Blue Les Paul Standard!
Prettiest guitar I've seen in a while.
I really dig everything about it.
My Les Paul experience has been limited. I once had a dreadfully shot old Custom that the frets were very gone on. I bought it as a roach, then bought hardware and some EMG's. But the neck never was really playable.
My second was a Studio, a few years ago. And I also had one of the stressed finish Double Cut Specials w P-90's, and a '93 LP Jr.
Still waiting for "The One," I guess.

Oops, I guess I should post a pic now, in the spirit of the thread.
Um, just squint and imagine your usual butterscotsh '52 RI Tele!

I played a used R8 at GC yesterday. It was nearly identical to your color, maybe just slightly lighter. They had $2499 marked on it. There were a cou[le of tiny dents near the togle switch. I don't know the year though.

But man, I gotta say, that I have not met an R8 that I didn't like. That was no exception. I love the fat neck. It is weird how the sound of these guitars are uniquely different from the Standard and the Custom that I have owned. These guitars prove that there is tone in the design.

What do you call that double cut away with two P-90s? Is that a RI of an old model? The switch looks like it is in an awkward place though. I bet it sounds wonderful.

kewlpack
04-02-2005, 05:09 PM
I believe that is a Les Paul Junior... they came stock with P90s (I think).

Crunchyriff
04-02-2005, 07:15 PM
That lil' unit to the right of the '58 Reissue (R8) is a "LP Faded Double Cut (doubleCutaway) " w/90's (not P100's, yay!), it's a 2004, and it has a nice, chunky '50's profile to the neck, too (yeah baby!). Of course, it is in TV Yellow, too. So, to be correct, no it's not a "LP JR".
And they are easy to confuse. Most Jr's have a single cutaway, but all of them have just one pickup. If it's two pickups, they termed it a "special" IIRC.

BTW, this guitar is a total sleeper. Technically, it's NOT a re-issue like my R8 is, as it is a Gibson USA axe & has the short neck-tenon; (the custom shop is now offering a historic LPDC w/the long tenon for about $1.8K); but aside from that, it's pretty accurate in many ways, but it sounds GLORIOUS. It has no gloss, is rough in spots and shows bare wood in spots in keeping with the whole "faded" concept- and I just DIG THIS GUITAR! It may well be the loudest electric guitar I've ever played in my life- acoustically it really really rings loud and clear, almost as loud as an acoustic. (and my R8 is a loud one, too)

The switch position looks more awkward than it is- very quick to get to and not in the way, though the vintage 50's versions had the sw placed in a few different spots over a period of mfg.; and they went ahead and moved the neck p'up back towards the bridge a tad for neck joint stability in the later '50's, which this one has that feature. Ironically, this is the only guitar I've ever played where the neck pickup's tone didn't suffer because of that location. (it's right about where a 24-fret guitar's neck pup would be) I think the power and freq response of the P90 there must compensate for that.

All things aside, these two guitars are some of the finest sounding Gibson's I've ever come across in 30 years, not to mention that I've ever owned. (and I've had more than a few) I actually play the LP DC more than my R8, and my R8 is my main guitar...

As far as historic LesPauls go, It is my belief that the R7 and R8 reissues are by FAR the best value of the historic series guitars; and though there are a few minor aesthetic quibbles about the production year (such as the amber knobs and slightly blue-ish inlays), 2001 was a banner year for both models.

I am a very blessed man.

Yes,brother you are a blessed man! My favorite overall pickup is a P-90,and on a slab-o-mahogany it is a sweet puppy. I had a '57 Special at one time that would sing like a bird.

OldB - well... I just got it a day or two ago. So far it has a VERY meaty kind of tone that I would compare to a Les Paul/PRS. The sustain in ... insane.

I spent an hour or so this morning EQ'ing and dialing in the tones I want to use with it.

I want to lower the action (the neck needs a truss rod tweak). Other than that, I'm liking it a lot! Pretty versatile with the coil tap.

The abalone all over the place really makes it look nice.

Update on the C-1 Elite - I adjusted the neck for low action and I'm really liking the way this thing plays. The tones are very thick... a bit dark, but easily EQ'd. Puh-lenty of chunk and dynamics.

Nice TA tele, leecow! Tom Anderson makes about the finest boutique Fender variants known to man, IMHO. I've owned two DropTops, still have one of them as seen below. It was one of my main recording and stage guitars for over 10 years, and still looks like new- aside from a bit of gold wear on the bridge.

The emerald green '88 PRS Custom is another one of those 'stage & studio' guitars, I used that one for about 14 years, now retired and going up for sale. Still in VERY nice shape- I just don't play it anymore. That particular TA and that particular PRS were my two main axes for duty for a number of years...

I have around 20 or so stringed instruments from electric guitars, acoustic guitars, ukes, mandolin, pedal steel, lap steel, hammered dulcimer, mandoling guitar, autoharps, cello, violin....what can I say, ( my wife says.."Honey, we are running out of space, can you sell afew you don't play?" ) I'm a sucker for anything with strings!

A few hi-lights I'll try to post soon:

1967 Gibson ES-335 - Cherry
1968 Gibson SG - Cherry
1971 Fender Telecaster - Blonde, turned to butterscotch
Chambered Mahogany Homebrew tele-naturla mahogany
Handmade Tele/paul...sort of like a Jackson Sweet-r-jazz. Kevin Bolinskey from the TDPRI is finishing the body up for me. should be here in a few weeks. Cant wait. Had some pickups hanwound to match the semi-hollow mahog body. Should be a stunner...playablity, tone and looks.
1966 Kent 823 Semi-Hollow Electric. A tripple bound, tripple pickup, nitro sunburst beauty from Japan. Plays like a dream and sounds like Lucille.
1958 Silvertone/Dano U-1. A killer slide guitar
1957 Supro Archtop...
Early 90's PRS EG-3 with Fralin Zero Hum pups.
1978 Tokai Strat. Copy of a 54. Beautiful guitar.

Nickcha:

Nice collection. Looks like you got most of the bases covered except a Ric 12 and a Telecaster. Tell me about the Shoreline Gold Strat.

Also, how do you like the Brian Setzer Gretsch?

The SLG Strat is a custom build that I had Bill Nash (Nashguitars.com) do for me. It's a very light, 1pc air dried Alder, super FAT flame neck w/ Braz. BW, 6105 frets and 10 radius (All wood from USACG); Callaham electronics and parts. Best Strat I've ever owned.

The Gretsch is a new Setzer 6120SSLVO. It's become the biggest surprize of all to me. I'd always wanted a Gretsch but heard things about them (cheesey build, too twangy, etc). But this is the most piano-like, HUGE sounding guitar I own. The neck is as stable as a rock and stays in tune w/ very little effort. It has the richest tones and I'm finding that it's nearly the perfect guitar for live P&W music, with it's broad variety of styles. I've got it through my '61 AC30 with an Analogman BiComp compressor and this thing just plays with beautiful authority.

BTW, the Goldtop R7 LP is the stuff. With a HUGE Braz. RW neck, HO pups (7.8/8.3 Alnico3) and an RS kit, it's about as nice a Historic as you'd want to find.

I did it! I added a Beale Street blue ES-335 to my rediculous blue guitar collection. My wife says that I did not tell her that I was going to buy it. However, I did tell her I bought it (1 minute after the purchase phone call). I got an incredible deal from Saul over at Centre City Music in San Diego. He did not have it in stock, so he had it dropped shipped directly from Gibson's warehouse in Memphis. There were only three left and this color has been discontinued from their production, but it can be special ordered.

I had to sell some prized gear to afford this guitar (old money recirculated). I sold a Marshall 1960AV, Marshall 1987X (RI 50w Plexi head), Weber Mass, and a very rare Peavey Classic 30 extension cabinet - 112E. I hated to see that stuff go, but I needed the room and the money.

Down at the bottom of these forum pages, there is a box next to the Goolge Search call Postan Image. If this worked correctly, then you will be able to see my image that I uploaded. It did not ask me to sign up. But there are various levels of storage amounts. The 50MB is free. That should get you about 400 properly sized pictures (600x400).

EDIT:

I deleted this picture because I had already shown it, and it was too wide.

It's because of the .html extension I believe... change it to filename.JPG and it will work... I just tried it with your particular URL.

That will only work if there is a real JPG at the URL in question.

Rev - I changed the extension on your URLs from ".html" to ".jpg" - they work that way.

FYI - Let's say you have one of those pix out there on photobucket or wherever... well, if you right click on the picture in a web browser and select properties, you can see the full HTTP URL link right there. Just highlight it and copy it - then paste that URL inside the img tag - voila... cake!

OK, that was simple enough. All that discussion was for AW's benefit. So let's go over that one more time:

a) Store your digital photo on your harddrive or removable media that your computer has access to. You may need a photo editor or viewer that can resize the picture to roughly 600x400 pixels.

b) At the bottom of the page is the "Post an Image" box. Or you can use Photobucket, lilypix or some other host. (often, your ISP gives you storage area with your email accounts. Upload the file from your local computer to that Internet storage area.

c) Obtain the URL for the photo location. Sometimes (as Alex said), you have to right click on the picture and get the properties. Then you can cut-n-paste that URL syntax to your forum post.

d) In the case of "Post an Image" box, the URL had an .html extension. I simply should have substituted .html for .jpg when I typed out my message on the thread.

Hopefully this is simple enough for you and others to follow. Good luck! Let's see those pix!

Bugs Henderson
Buddy Whittington
Jim Marshall
Rick Derringer
Redd Volkaert
Dan Fogleberg
Paul Reed Smith

Folks I have met and talked with (autographs, but no photos):

Bart Millard (MercyMe)
Paul Baloche

Audio Adrenaline
Kutless
Sonic Flood
Avalon
Mark Farner (Grand Funk Railroad)
Tony Randell
Jack Klugman

Missed opportunities (for photo or autograph):

John Wayne (shook his hand at the Dallas premier of Chissolm - 1965?)
Jack Kilby (invertor of the integrated circuit)
David Alan Cole
Ray Wiley Hubbard
Jerry Lewis (on an escalator at Neimann-Marcus)
Stevie Ray Vaughn (saw him at an outdoor concert in 1982 - I was clueless as to who he was)
Tommy Shaw (Styx)
Andy Griffeth
Marty Stuart
Jeff Beck
Yan Hammer
Three Dog Night
Michelle Shock
Joe King Corasco (mixed sound for him and his band once)
Will Ray
Lee Ann Rimes
Gary P Nunn

I suppose there are others, but I can't think of any others. It is intersting to note, I had met nearly 95% of these folks in my home town or not far.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention all my brothers here on this forum. You guys seem to be the most important celebrities of all. \:D/

Funny, Bugs mentioned that some folks like to list all the people they have met, as if they have worked with them as their musical credits. The legend goes around that Bugs played with Jimi Hendrix in Dallas and Bugs ate his lunch. Bugs says, "I wish it were true, but if I ever met Jimi, I sure don't remember it.".

All these folks that I have met don't get me any closer to being a celebrity. But it sure has added spice to my life.

Wow, I wish I had an Olson! I had a decent lead on one through Guitar Gall and they quoted me $7,500, and I even had the loan cleared for it! Then I called GG and they had sold it the day before. I asked Jim if he would get me some prices for a new one, specifically an SJ, and he quoted $24,000.

I have met Dave Beegle a few times, saw him play with Keaggy in Denver a couple times. One of my friends in High School played drums in Dave's band 4th Estate back in the hair band days. Dave is a sick player for sure. :-)

I actually got to jam with Keaggy when he played here once....it wasn't my choosing! I was working sound for him and my wife and some friends asked him to call me up during his second set.He was cordial, and had grace.I did get to play one of his Olsons....he had one normal tuned, and one tuned a whole step down,so I had to capo 2nd fret.A wonderful guitar, owned by a wonderful human being and player.
I proceeded to get it right out of tune, and hit notes that aren't supposed to be there. :ROFL

Keaggy had his Olson in standard E440? Thats rare!

I have played a few Olson SJ cutaways. They tend to sound and play the best tuned about 1.5 to 2 steps low in DADGAD with some heavy gauge strings. Leo Kottke used his that way, and his was the first Olson I ever played. For obvious reasons, Kottke went with a Taylor Jumbo with a very loud top for touring instead of an Olson that probably cost more than he made off of his last album.

Keaggy has actually told alot of folks to look into Charis Guitars instead of Olson, not because they are better, but because they are way way way cheaper. I have not yet played one, but I may have to buy one for that chance. I know they sound good, almost identical to an Olson in the same body size and neck width. Charis sells for about $5,500 instead of Olson's $14,000 to $24,000.

Check the site out...

http://www.charisacoustic.com/

I may settle for one, but I still would rather have an Olson. :|

Hi, this seemed like a good thread to begin on. I followed stephen over from TDPRI. After doing some poking around I see that this is an active site, and some familiar and faces here whom I hold in high regard. I especially appreciate the mission / faith statement in the "About" forum, and the splash at the top of the page that exhorts us about priorities.

I've been playing for 40 years; Rock, R&B, Jazz, C&W. The last 11 primarily for the Lord. I also play in a local community jazz big band made up mostly of college and hot High School aged players; my son plays lead and 2nd 'bone. He and I also get together with a group of (Christian) Bluegrass players every other week.

Hey Brian, Welcome,

For those who will never be able to $$ a zion, is the Jackson Dinky design relativly the same?

dmw
07-07-2005, 07:12 PM
The Jackson Dinky body is similar in size to most Zions, at least those with a Strat influenced body. Early Zions, like the one pictured on a Phil Keaggy album, "Wind and the Wheat," I believe, and some like Kerry Livgren play, are what I'd call full-size Strat style bodies. Honestly I felt a little self-conscious about playing that guitar as I'm 6' 2 1/2" tall and football player sized, and, right or wrong, I thought I was "too big" for the guitar. If you prefer a more traditional headstock instead of the "pointy" Jackson version, look for one the the PC models, which refer to those modeled after the ones Phil Cullen plays. Those are very nice guitars, and the standard pickups and hardware should be fine enough that you wouldn't want or need to upgrade them.

I'd not hesitate to buy a Zion. I'd check the used market, and, personally, I'd prefer one of the earlier ones with the standard body size, but YMMV. BTW, IMHO you can't buy a guitar from a nicer Christian man than Ken Hoover, the president of Zion Guitars.

That's a beautiful Zion. I once had an Action Series Zion (not made anyl longer). Once in awhile I regret selling it as it had the best neck I've every played on... Ken Hoover does the best fret job I've ever seen on electric guitars.Thank you. True about the initial setup; played like I was ice skating. Ken's and Jim Gray's (since departed) graciousness was just incredible. I can't say enough about them. I wanted a 'do-it-all' instrument and know just enough about guitar construction to be a real pest.

I gave Ken and Jim an idea of what I wanted to use the guitar for; to praise and glorify the Lord, the looks, and the sonics I was looking for (to take just a single electric guitar to church so needed to sound similar to my Telecaster, Stratocaster, and my L5 - got sort of close to a Les Paul instead of the L5's big body resonance). They selected the woods and other components. They were great to work with, sending me pix of woods, other similar guitars, and mine at 2 stages of construction.

The pickup config is HSH; 2 Seymour-Duncan Phil Keaggy Custom JBs and a JB Jr in the middle. It has a 5-way switch & 3 push-pull pots; master volume, tone, and bridge pickup level blend. The 'blend' control and was new to them but they researched it with a Seymour Duncan engineer and came up with a great solution. The JBs split with the vol and tone pot switches. The blend push-pull pot activates the bridge JB when pulled regardless of the 5-way switch position. This gives me any combination of the 3 pickups with the ability to blend the bridge pickup mix in with either or both of the JBs in series or parallel mode.

Also I use this guitar almost exclusively for Christian music, so I wanted it to look like heaven. The inspiration was Rev 21 that often mentions Jasper, which comes from a Phoenician word that means a stone that can look like fire. So I asked them to do a finish like a Jarros that looks like it's on fire under stage lights. They hadn't been asked to do a finish like that but researched it too. They (were kind of amazed that they) found that particular billet of maple with the wide quilts for the top, and used gloss lacquer over successive coats of transparent yellow (wiped off) then Gretsch 6120 orange stains. While it's a bit darker than a hot wood fire, it has a moving yellow hologram effect under stage lighting. It's now offered as an optional finish.

Again Ken and Jim listened to all of my desires and produced a killer guitar for me to glorify and praise Jesus. They are truly wonderful!

Thanks. It's the stock Heritage pups which are Schallers. Heritage makes great guitars (Jazzrat should know) and this is a great sounding guitar. But I'm more of a single coil guy (i.e., Strats and Teles) and prefer the longer scale length. I named this Les Paul after my youngest son, Wes Paul (aren't I clever? :-) ). I keep this one for times when I need a humbucker sound, which it gives in spades!

Yeah, the Saphire model. I have the pickgard, but the previous owner lost the gold mounting bracket and gold screws. Funny, I been saying for years how much I dispise gold hardware and that I would never buy a guitar with gold hardware. Unfortunately, this is the only stock blue Gibson with P-90s. However, now that I have it in my hands, I'm actually liking the look with the cream parts.

The Gem came in with a problem with the bridge pup adjustment screw. It would not adjust. So, I took the pup out and discovered that the brass screw insert had pulled out of the wood - the screw was not doing anything. So, I applied some wood glue around the wood hole and placed some wood splinters around the perimeter of the hole. I threaded the screw into the insert and hammered it back into the hole (the splinters helped give it a tighter fit). Then I applied another heavy dose of glue around the seam overlapping the wood and inserts (I did both of them). Let it dry. Then, I reversed the springs to where the smaller tapered end was pushing on the insert and not the body of the guitar (the spring pushing on the body is what caused the insert to lift out of the hole). Now it works great and I have a lot of confidence that this is a permanent fix.

There is a significant ding that broke through the paint on the bottom of the horn. But you cannot see it unless you look at the bottom edge of the guitar (which is rare).

It has a cool vintage sound. The P-90s do not sound like Strat pups, but they have character. At the same time, they have a very Les Paul sound but not as hot as my other Humbucker guitars. The action and feel of the guitar is not as solid as my LP Std. But this guitar costs considerably less. I think that I am going to get a lot of enjoyment out of it. This is my poorman's '56 goldtop - urr make that bluetop.
