I found this at, http://consumingfire.com/MetalReach.htm

"Altho I can get confused about life and it's lessons, I can say that I am trying very hard to learn. I can see that I am learning how to care for others and for myself. Slowly sometimes, but surely nevertheless. I can play beautiful music. This is a gift that God has given me and a gift that I do my best to use for good and give it all I have. I am loved by many of God's children for this, and because it does show that I am trying to grow in this life. God saved me among so many and I must accept that he has a purpose for me. If I am good enough for God, I should be good enough for me. Thank you, God! God...I pray that I be cleansed/washed in the blood of Jesus Christ. Born again. I pray that I may be of use to you as you see fit. Help me that I may do my part. Amen

Unfortunately, the link to the journal is down/not found. I'm looking into finding out if this is real or what. It ought to be interesting. If anyone else has info to add to this, please do, but lets try to make this verifiable, or deniable: in other words, we want the truth!

Snipit from Tommy Shannon's website (a letter he wrote in 1996):

" . . . . I will always remember one night, we got down on our knees and prayed for help. There was no instant answer. We continued getting high. Was that prayer unanswered because we kept using?

That prayer was answered in the most profound way. That prayer was the turning point of our lives. We had to continue doing what we were doing until the pain became too hard to bear. We were broken inside. First Stevie, and then myself. We had no power, nothing to stand upon. We were beaten. However, that was the best thing that ever happened to us. Even that suffering was a gift from God. We had to reach the bottom, before we could be open to God's grace. . . . "

I thought I had lost this link forever. I found it about two years ago, but then I couldn't find it one day that I wanted to draw a reference to it on SMS (TDPRI).

This is the direct link to the letter:

http://www.tommyshannon.com/thoughts/tsletter1996.html

But I found it by going to www.tommyshannon.com and selection "Thoughts" (http://www.tommyshannon.com/thoughts.html). Great reading for the soul from someone that we all admire and knew Stevie SO VERY well.

This is a somewhat edited and shortened version from Tommy. His orginal posting more or less said 'After we prayed for nearly an hour in the hotel room, we got up and finished our rails of cocaine'. They were in deep and had hit a real low in their lives.

Thanks for helping me locate this link again.

.....I had found that link too. Its interesting, but i would like to see the link to Stevie's Journal (the lost link in consumingfire.com), and some verification that it is authentic.

The search continues...........

This link seems pretty legit. There was a time when this letter was all over the internet but it is harder to find now. There is a similar story about Clapton becoming a Christian years ago:

http://archive.guitarplayer.com/archive/artists/clapton85.shtml[/url]

Here is a quote form the article:

During the Blind Faith tour, Clapton had also quietly converted to Christianity. As he told Steve Turner in a 1975 cover story for Rolling Stone. "Two guys came to my dressing room. They were just two Christians, and they said, 'Can we pray with you?" I mean, what can you do? So we knelt down and prayed, and it was really like the blinding light, and I said, 'What's happening? I feel much better!' And, then I said to them, "Let me show you this poster I've got of Jimi Hendrix." I pulled it out and there was a portrait of Christ inside, which I hadn't bought, had never seen in my life before. And, it just knocked the three of us sideways. From then on, I became a devout Christian."

Jimi Hendrix too. Apparently, on his last stop to his hometown of Seattle, he had a very deep conversation with his aunt. A conversation where he admitted that he'd been abusing drugs and wanted to stop. He also professed his belief in Jesus as his savior. Obviously he continued living his rock star lifestyle afterwards, but I'd like to think that, had he lived, he would have found a MUCH better way of life without drugs, without rock star trappings, and WITH Jesus Christ.

Rory Gallagher as well. He was raised a Catholic, and I've read somewhere that he was a believer, but I don't think he really shared that side of himself with the rest of the world. His lifestyle was a blueprint for the way a musical idol SHOULD behave. He never did drugs at all - his bandmates say they never saw him even smoke a joint! He didn't chase girls - his bandmates in Taste (his early band) say they never saw him with any groupies during their 2 or 3 years together. He had a reputation as a hard drinker, but in truth he only drank socially. He was just photographed with a drink in his hand much of the time.

Roy Buchanan was someone else that was a believer, and seemingly very spiritual minded. But his personal demons kept holding him back. So tragic.

God bless you my friends! So good to be here!

Praise the Lord!

I don't know if any of you are Social Distortion fans, but I found this interview with their bass player that you may find interesting - he is a brother in Christ. Unfortunately, although he played on their latest album (the first in 8 years) he has now left the band as he doesn't want to tour. Can't say I blame him. The link is to HM Magazine's website.

Remember VanHalen III? The version with Gary Cherone from Extreme? Gary is a born again beleiver too. I beleive his stance on abortion (released a public letter against abortion stating his Faith) got him booted out of VH, rather than lack luster cd sales.

Probably right about Cherone; he was active in a "rock for life" organization a while back but I can't remember the name of it.

Yeah, he is friends with the head guy at Rock for Life. Also, his new band is called "Tribe of Juda". I like that name! Pathetically though, I havent checked them out yet  .

Their current CD "Elvis...something" cover leaves a lot to be desired (some guy with a silver pistol ala suicide motif - very "dark" IMHO). Didnt' get a chance to listen to it. It was in my coworkers car when we went to lunch the other day.

I would like to think lots of musical celebs have become a part of the church... although calling one's self a Christian does not necessarily make us one. As one of the Early Christian writers (circa 150 AD) said, "Better to be found a Christian [by Christ in lifestyle, deed, and teaching]."

Anyway... just 2¢ because I dropped by. ;)

I agree, that is why I was asking about SRV's Journal, to see if it was verifiable. While it looks promising that he was a beleiver, and I dont say this to offend any fans, or families of Stevie, but it could be wishful thinking too ('I know Stevie musta accepted the Lord before he died'), of those he left behind. I have seen that happen many times over. Just recently when my sister in law passed away, my own mom, and aunt said they feel that Donna accepted Christ before her death, because of.... . I hope it's true, but I'll have to wait and see.

I cannot confirm one way or another. But I do know this:

One of our youth ministers at church said that he saw SRV playing live in Nashville just a few weeks before SRV died. He says that SRV actually witnessed to the crowd much to many observers surprise. The guy at church will always give the story that SRV had given his life to God because of what he saw on stage that day.

I guess I knew the name of the organization after all!

There have been some big dissapointments over the years - U2 and King's X come to mind immediately.

Oh wow - you reminded me of something. When I was a teen (around 16 or 17) I saw a concert in Denver, Colorado at the Rainbow Music Hall (a tiny gig house). The band was called "The Rez Band" and had some whacky Cindy Lauper-styled lead singer. Anyway, the music that was being played prior to the show was from this "Christian band, U2". Of course, back then it didn't really make an impact on me - then as U2 got bigger, they lost the religious flavor.

Anyway - just rang a bell for me. Wow, that was a while ago.

The issue of SRV and his faith were quite a subject in the months after his death. The 'rumour' is in fact the truth; and his mother had written a public statement regarding Stevie's conversion, and faith. Basically, he was raised with the knowledge of Christ/exposure to the Gospel; and after years of a 'hard life', he submitted his life to Christ.

It's the truth.

I had a link to SRV and Jimmie Vaughan's mother's webpage, where she went into detail about Tommy Shannon, Stevie, and I think maybe Jimmie Vaughan, all accepting Jesus in her presence, and then going into rehab. (at least Tommy and Stevie Ray did).

I no longer have the link, but I felt pretty good about the change that many saw in SRV in his last year, especially the final few weeks.

I saw an Austin City Limits a few days back w/ a couple of clips of SRV's first performance on the show followed by his last performance about 6 months prior to his death. I'm pretty sure that the noticeable difference in his performance and stage presence was due to more than just experience and the addition of a keyboard :)
