OK, I just did a double stacked JRC 4558 mod on my Maxon OD808. What the heck? Whomever figured this out is on my prayer list! Awesome!

It just gives you "more", doesn't it!!! I've been playing stacked chips for a year now - they're awesome!!!

Some pedals (Modded TS9, modded OD3, etc.) are going to stay as is but a lot of my pedals are going to get stacked chips. I was so impressed with the OD 808 that I couldn't believe that adding a $.45 part could change the pedal that much!
I have to see what it does to my Maxon OD9.

Double the pleasure double the fun!
It opens up the gain of the pedal, less noise, and different (better to my ear) EQ.

I would say that it also adds clarity to your gain allowing more of your guitar/amp natural tone to shine through.

Here is a pic I got off of the web that clearly shows the IC (integrated circuit) What I am doing is taking the chip out, putting an 8 din socket in it's place. Solder it in then I can swap IC's without having to heat up the soldering iron. I then try different chips, different combinations of double stacked chips etc!

Both my Franklin mod SD-1 and Franklin ProDrive had IC sockets that allow for simple chip swapping. You definitely hear the difference the chips make that way as you can easily change them in and out. It also, in a sense, gives you a bunch of different pedals as a chip swap makes it sound a bit different. Granted you can't do that "on the fly" between songs, but it does give you the ability to hear the difference chips make in your pedal tone so you can fine tune/dial in/create "your sound" with it.

No, I think your amp sounds great but you won't let it run the way it needs to. Headroom is of the devil! :yeah:

Headroom is what those of us who are forgetful lack...
Do you only stack with the same type of chip? What about a triple stack? Closest I've come to chip stacking would be pringles...

You have to buy the book on his site. If you sign up for the news letter it is $15.00
I am not going to post the info on the mods as I feel it would be wrong.

4 chips is the most I've heard of. My Maxon OD 9 has 3 JRC 4558D's in it. I don't recommend modding Maxon pedals as the boards seem to have an issue with traces peeling with heat. FYI

I've found these chip stacking discussions at least interesting. I've got several pedals that might be worth experimenting with, DOD 250? Boss SD-1? Boss DS-1? Some later variety yellow DOD pedals? What about stacking these preamp chips in other effects like chorus or delay pedals? I'd think added clarity in these might be desirable.
FWIW, there are several amps (Matchless comes to mind) that have paralleled triodes on the input. This increases the output impedance and gain of the stage and also decreases the noise. I believe it's a technique that originated in the hifi world.

I'll be honest... This is something I've never really heard about before... It makes sense...
