I'm looking for a book that can shed some light on the book of Romans, ideally it would be a readable commentary. i find that Paul just goes around in circles sometimes and is very hard to understand at points. anybody have anything that would make an easier time of it?
and while that's out there, any good devotional books for Psalms that you would reccomend? i've seen some before but didn't make a note and can't find them now.

Dr. J. Vernon McGee. To quote him, "put the cookies on the bottom shelf where the kids can get 'em". A very good source for simple explanations of the entire bible. Written by a PHD for the average Christian with enough references for you to search out more scholarly and esoteric treatments of the subjects. Covers each book in the bible verse by verse for the most part. It is based on his radio program of the same name that took you through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation in five years. Its available as a 5 volume set or for individual books at most Christian book stores.

Having consulted a bro' who did Romans as his thesis, he says he hasn't read any non-confusing ones! He says Tom Wright is usually excellent: -

i think you should. he's got the big "thru the Bible" books out there, but there are also individual books of the Bible printed for$9. a great deal, i thought.

favorites of his "strange" analogies/applications is the story of a young "colored" boy back some many years ago who went to a "white" church and eventually joined. He was about 12. The deacons were talking to him about his testimony and trying to find a reason not to let him into the congregation. They asked the child how he got saved and he said, "Well, I did my part and God did His part." The deacons were a bit excited at this since they knew that man had no part in salvation, so they asked him what he meant by this and he said, "I did the sinnin, and God did the savin!"
I love that story!!!!!

Oh! I remember that analogy! I recall when I first heard it (it was his radio program) I thought, "OH NO! Vernon is about to step in a stinky pile of doo-doo!" And I rofl when I heard how he brought it all together!
Good ole Vernon had some good-uns!
