This microphone right here:

........has me totally floored. It captured my tone so spot on, I will never use another mic again when recording! Seriously, it absolutely captured my tone, so much so, that I would bet that if I performed a blind back to back listening test, people wouldnt be able to tell if "it was live, or Memorex"
I will probably never use another mic in recording, because I have never gotten my tone nailed the way this one did. I've gotten close, but not spot on like the SM7 captured. When we start recording our Studio CD, thats the mic I will use for every song.
And for a recording mic, it's not that expensive: You can get it for $349.00 bucks at Musicians Friend.

That's good news. Until now, the only single mic I'd give that nod to is the Royer 121, and, at $1,200 is just a tad pricey...

I always liked Electrovoice RE-20 (big dynamic) mics for the studio, but that was 20 years ago plus!:embarassed:
I have to be real careful with vocal mics, or I wind up sounding just like Willy Nelson (which only works for Willy Nelson tunes, or comic effect at Praise and Worship).

Do you need phantom power?
Thanks for the report. A good recording mic that doesn't color your tone is great.

i have an sm7b which is the current model. it's a really good mic but not the end all for guitar cabs imo. the sm7 close with a large diaphragm condenser mic at a distance is more my cup of tea. it is an awesome mic for male vocals.

I thought you had a typo at first. I have not heard of this model.
Does that mean they introduced this mic in 1907? Perhaps 2007? SM57 and SM58 were named to represent their years of introduction (1957 & 1958).
So many folks rave over the Sennheiser e609. I have used one once live on stage, I certainly liked it. Have you tried a e609 and are able to make a comparison?

No, I havent compared it to the sennhieser.

The Senn e609 is a great mic- I have not used it in the studio, though.

I also have an e609 and although it is great live it isn't my choice for studio micing guitar cabs.

...for studio micing guitar cabs.
"D'oH!"
No wonder I sound silly here. I didn't realize it was for mic'in' up cabinets.
Oh well, I still liked RE-20's for that too.:headphones:

The RE20 is along the same lines as the SM7. Large diaphragm dynamic mics that are basically made for radio broadcasting.

Things have changed as more ribbon mics are being used on guitar cabs these days but just about every session I do I stick a 57 in front of the amp to see what I get out of it.

I may have seen Bon Jovi using this mic...
Let me clarify... I definitely saw this mic while I was "possibly" seeing Bon Jovi... um... Sounded great... ...um...if I actually... heard... nevermind... It was a great concert! (I bet, had I been there... I mean...) (I was the music pastor at an ULTRA conservative church at the time... hehe... The elders of that church would have had my head...)
