Hey Jazzrat, great lookin basses. I'll bet they sound as great as they look. I'm enticed by the P A/E, kinda gives me GAS.

Do you find youself playing the 5 more for the hymns? Cause that's what I've been considering for my next purchase.

BTW, I don't have digital camera at this point, so, I'll give you a description of mine, and let you form the picture....

2000 Fender Deluxe P Bass Special - two tone burst

My friend has a P-Bass special. Nice!
To answer your question....I use the fretless mostly for the jazz gigs I play, but I have been looking for a chance to play it at church.
The two compliment each other very well.
The 5-string for church playing is very helpful, especially for hymns in flat keys.

Hmmm... I do like that phrase!

Both of them are Koa wood Carvins, the one on the left is fretless.

Tom, that one sure brings back some memories! My first bass was a black P-bass with a gold anodized pickguard like that. I played literally hundreds of gigs on that thing, and learned a whole lot about music through those four strings.

Nice rig, buddy!

Thank you kind Webmaster! I'll humbly go back and re-read the methods of posting pictures now....hehe.
That one is a slab mahogany body with a maple neck made by Peter Florance of Voodoo pickup fame. It also has his Pbass pickups in it, and a Raven Labs pre-amp. Sounds and plays great. I played it at church a few months back, and our worship pastor said that that is the bass tone he has been searching for the last 10 years. (Emphasis on TONE, not PLAYING) There have been some fabulous basses played here, and he picked this one over them all. It was finished in aged Oly white by Mike Nihen of Stringpull Guitar Shop in VA. Strung with TI flatwounds and it is a real thumper.

Great lookin' basses, guys! Here are mine:

First, the department store special that got me through the '70s and '80s...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97/bardani/bass1980.jpg

It originally had a sunburst finish. I repainted it black and added what I called my own logo on the headstock. Sort of a lightening bolt shaped like a "B" (for my first name). I wore it out long ago. Used it for many a church sponsored gig.

I started with a tuned-down Danelectro 6-string in a folk band in the '70s then moved on to using a Hofner Beatle bass that was owned by another member of the folk group until my parents got me the bass above.

During my most active time of music ministry, I played one of Yamaha's high end basses. I don't have any pics of it. It was owned by the choir director of the church I was active in at the time. I was primary for sunday P&W, the choir (who also toured a bit), youth services and a Christian Rock outreach band. That was more than 10 years ago now. Ah, memories.

Here are the two I use now. Mostly for recording. The Lord hasn't put me in any bands recently.....

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y97/bardani/basses_0305.jpg

On the left is my Lakland 55-01. I've got Lakland custom-wound nickel strings with a tapered B on it at the moment. It handles very well and sounds great to my ears. The one on the right is my Yamaha RBX350. The stock electronics died in it about two years ago, so I bought a set of active EMGs. I put TI Jazz Flats on it when I got the Lakland. It gives me a much darker sound with more growl. Alomost makes me want to convert it to a fretless, but I'd rather just buy a fretless than sink more money into it. Besides, I just spent more than $400 on upgrades for my Strat... Out of my own savings, of course. Just like the Lakland purchase. The wife insisted on that. :wife

Going back to a 5 string, seems as though contemporary Gospel tunes need that low B to fill it out. Will get rid of some stuff to pay for this one.

It just arrived yesterday. The build quality on these Lakland Skylines is fantastic. The Fralins sound perfect for Jazz tone too. I'll be selling my Fender USA J bass when I get back from Germany, I don't need 2 J's, this fiver will cover all of that and more. A P and J cover a lot of sonic territory.

I hear that everywhere I see the name "Lakland". Nice lookin' bass! Is that a Jerry Osborne or a Darryl Jones?

tom grossheider

That one's a Joe Osborne, the Darryl Jones basses have a slightly altered body shape and block inlays, along with Aero pickups instead of the Fralins. Passive but very toneful, I played it at rehearsal on Thursday and loved it.

I bought the Fury V because the worship team I play with, plays mostly in flats. I thought the low B would make it easier. I was right once I got used to that extra string. Finally sold the Grabber. It just wasn't getting used anymore.

Blessings, Terry

On a recent trip, I hit up a few pawn shops looking for a bass. At first I was not interested in a fiver. Then the sales lady said that I could get 45% off on a bass. So, for a paltry $165 I got this Peavey Fury V! It's active and still had the original protective plastic on the control cavity covers. It's very light weight and is easier to play than my Squier Affinity P four-banger. The bridge is massive. Okay, so I'm in the honeymoon phase. On to the pix!

Hey Terry!

Geez, it took me so long to see this post!

I had one of those back in my bass playing days. I had an ebony one. Heavy as I recall. Used it a lot iin the studio, but live, I always went for my Jazz bass.

It's a purty one, too! Every once in a while, I decide I need to get a 5-string, but then I try to play one and get frustrated. If I could find a 5 with the same spacing as a 4, I would be sold!

Thanks Mike!

It's a Malden 'Karma" model. Not as thick as a LesPaul, Mahogany Body, Neck, Maple Top in recently-discontinued Gold Top w/ (also discontinued) Block markers on rosewood fingerboard. Binding on neck & body. Pretty impressive fit & finish.

Probably the best Korean import I've ever played & a VERY giggable axe.

Wow, some very nice basses here! I sold the Lakland JO5 to get a Lakland 55-02D fretless which was a lot of fun, then sold that one and got a Fender Roscoe Beck fiver string. This one had the pickguard butchered and a replaced nut, but it sure sounds great! Same string spacing as a regular J bass, lots of tone possibilities and totally passive. This is very light too, much lighter than I expected. USA made, alder body and Hipshot tuners. Veryt well put together and nicely balanced too.

Time to wake this place up a bit. Put a Hammon Engineering Dark Star pickup in this repro Pbass and it just blows the standard Pbass sound away. Really full, never muddy, plenty of highs when needed. Sounds superb with flatwounds.

I like the industrial style look to that pick-up!

So is it getting into say, T-Bird Bass 'tonk' (think John Entwistle)? Or does it give a more robust PBass boom? Active, or passive?

tom grossheider
07-20-2006, 01:19 PM
Passive all the way, very sensitive to picking location. Can be punchy and aggressive at the bridge, smooth and thicker closer to the neck, very nice! I love a good Pbass, but this is all that and more. Not tried it with roundwounds yet, these are TI flats at the moment. A real keeper!
