When I got to work today I found that my yogurt was frozen. I sent an email to my wife who will get home before me asking her to turn the refrigerator up. She sent back an email saying if it is freezing shouldn't we turn it down?
Only in English do turn gas on rather than turn it in. What's your thought on these types of sentences.

It took me a minute or so: turn it up= raise the temprature.
But, I'm still struggling with turn gas on vs. turn it in. :crazy :banghead :dunno

used to tell the story of a french men who went to the gas company in NY and asked for the gas to be "turned in". The CSR said, "No, you want the gas turned on." The frenchmen said, "I know what I want. I want the gas turned in!" They went back and forth for a while until finally the frenchmen said, "Look, I want the gas IN the house, not ON the house!."
Only in english. :dunno

The higher the number on the fridge dial, the colder it is...... so turning it down is actually turning up the temp. So the right answer is.... it depends on your perspective! :crazy

Is this like that "driving on a parkway and parking on a driveway" kind of thing? :crazy

Here's how it goes at our house (english):
:hmmm:
Lovely wife: "Honey, it's getting hot upstairs. Will you turn up the A/C please?"
Me: "Ya, I just turned it down to 72 about ten minutes ago."
Lovely wife: "Oh. Well, turn it up a little bit more because it is still too warm."
Me: "Okay, I'll turn it down to 70."
And the refrigerator is no different. Funny - the pattern is different when it's cold and we always "turn up the heat" to make it warmer. :jao:

But when I turn the gas on after I've turned in, my wife gets a bit grouchy.
