I see pictures of folks hanging their guitars on the wall. I figured this was an acceptable way to keep your guitars then I read in a pst that it may actually do some harm to the necks.

I have three kids and a lab so my guitar stays in the case. But which is it. can you hang'm or not?

I don't think there are any issues with regard to the necks. The main issue is probably humidity, at least with solid (non-laminated) acoustic guitars.

Humidity is the main issue, and also in my office, the heat would blow right on them from the other side of the room, so I have the vent closed off and just leave the door open.

I have a couple of guitars on Hercules wall hangers. Humidity is not that big of a problem in Tennessee. No neck problems either.

I would never hang one of my guitars on the wall - think its one of newtons laws " What ever goes up must come down " or something like that - Ive heard some sad tales about guitars coming off hangers and hitting the ground - After i play any guitars- it goes back in the case- and when i have to leave it out - on a stand - it only goes on my Slingerland pro stand !

Id also like to say Hi - this is my second post !

like Clint Eastwood would say
Hang Em High....lol
if you have a good hanger mounted into a stud, it's not a problem...

Since my life seems to operate according to Murphy's Law, my guitars go in the case when not in use, period.

For the past six years or so I have been running a music store. We have about 40 wall hangers in the main guitar room in addition to stands. You do the math. We have at all times 40 guitars on wall hangers; we’re open 6 days a week. Each day several pro musicians, kids, teens and old gals and geezers pop by. Some are careful, some are not.

I have absolutely no clue how many guitars have been on that wall, or the number of times a guitar is picked down and hung back up again, but I know for a fact that we have never even once had a guitar fall from a hanger. The guitars on stands on the other hand have been knocked over more times than I like to imagine.

We use a pretty inexpensive European brand of wall hangers and they have served us well.

There are two caveats that come to mind re: hanging guitars on the wall.

1. I would be careful not to hang an acoustic guitar over a heat vent. That could dry it out pretty quickly.

2. I would excersize care hanging a guitar against an outside wall, especially if the wall is not very well insulated. The temperature difference between the wall and the room itself could cause problems.

It's far too dusty around here to leave a guitar out of the case.:(

After 38 years of following the rules, after finding the rules, keeping guitars safely in cases, flat if possible, not standing like a suitcase, and apparently not leaning in the case like a hmmmm.... hockey stick perhaps, I have finally decided, but with proper humidity, correct temps and very strong & anchored holders to put up 3 rather small walls of exposed guitars in a little private unit for myself.

Yes, inside a building, or I might get the doghouse, or preferably the garage. :yikes:

Walls at least 2 X 6, for support and bracing of the hangers and overall weight and leverage factors, plus more insulation, everything over concrete blocks too, with a steel beam overhead.

I am going to have a soft floor, and carpet the walls up to guitar length height, actually lean the cases below, and leave some space for a bed, night table, tiny TV and manageable wall units w/shelves and my choice of much smaller amps now.

Hooligan, quality of the hanger and strength of the mount (plus everything they said about humidity and air movement) is EVERYTHING! Umm ... when it comes to hanging guitars. My friends have been hanging theirs up for decades, forever.

I hope the necks don't pull off or anything silly like that, but I've waited long enough to see what's left of my guitars. lol
