In the 4-Stringers Forum Bass "Ah-ha!" Advice? (http://gpawf4christ.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3423) thread I made such a big deal about reading. Last Jr college band rehearsal I was utterly humiliated when the director handed out charts to discover what we will compete with at the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival (http://www.jazz.uidaho.edu/default.aspx?pid=101756) next month. One tune we decided not to do at the festival but will perform later this season was Gordon Goodwin's Big Fat Band's (http://www.gordongoodwin.com/index1.html) tune Hunting Wabbits (http://www.alfred-music.com/player.php?item_no=jem04005). Very few guitar chords in this piece. Most of the guitar part is like the the horn intro in this score (http://www.stagepass.com/images/lookinside/JEM04005.pdf). It was amazing to hear everyone else play their parts from the downbeat, yet I sat there totally inept. Yeah I know it's my choice to play jazz, and in this band, but I have so much to learn. But in the spirit of 1Chron 25 I want to be able to, and do use these skills in service to our Lord Jesus Christ.

It's okay Brian. You can still play jazz and be my friend... charts or no.

:poke:

Anybody else showing a little love for the jazz-man?

I dunno...

The guitar part in that score is right up my alley. I played it for my wife and she said that I never sounded better.rofl

(For those who may not have looked at the score, it starts with 9 measures of rest.)

A song we will perform to compete with next month is John LaBarbera (http://www.johnlabarbera.com/)'s arrangement of Miles' So What (http://www.johnlabarbera.com/media/sowhat_edit.mp3). It's a long piece; 336 measures plus repeats, 1/2 of which is playing the uni head with the sax section. The other half though is pretty boring D dorian to Eb Dorian  chord vamps in the solo sections. I don't think in modes, why didn't the guy write D-7 to Eb-7 and just have the guitarist working with chordal and sub chordal lines (the way the greats did/do)? It's hip to be square...

Well I misunderstood about competing next month with So What (http://www.johnlabarbera.com/media/sowhat_edit.mp3). However we will be doing it in our local performances this season. We're going to open with a medium grade, Samba Facil (http://www.kendormusic.com/2007/mp3/kmb02.mp3). Guitar plays the intro chords, then a uni head with 1st trumpet, 2nd 'bone, and lead alto, then takes a 32 bar chorus; I love latin solos. The second piece we'll do is a ballad; In A Sentimental Mood (http://www.emusic.com/samples/m3u/song/10594399/11143410.m3u). Guitar also plays uni head in this piece with 1st tenor. We'll finish out with this up bop instrumental arrangement of How High The Moon (http://garyw0001.com/GMIDI/HowHigh2D.MID) (forgive the midi seq). Guitar is all comping but I'm hangin' on by my fingernails as the chords fly by.
