OK...since I have a few moments, I may as well post about another cool pedal I got from Awenda music.
Already very happy with my purchase of the fantastic "Valve", I had been wanting a vintage style fuzz for quite some time. About a year ago, a fellow member of the TDPRI sent me three of his fuzz pedals to test out. A fulltone 69, soulbender and a Pedalwrx McFuzz. While all were good, the 69 knocked my socks off. So, I figured a good Fuzz Face clone is what I needed. The last fuzz I owned was some 25 years ago. I've only had two in my life, the short live Sunn Buzz ( which excelled at Innagoddadavida and nothing else ) and the huge, yet ugly Maestro unit ( not the "satisfaction" wedge one ) with the two huge wheels for volume and fuzz. At that time, I really did not appreciate what a fuzz did.
So, for the past year I've been researching fuzz pedals trying to find something less than $100 that would float my boat. I tried several..the mass marketed DOD Fuzz, the Dunlop Fuzz Face reissure, Dunlop Hendrix Fuxx Unit, etc. None of them did anything to make me forget the glorious corpulet tones the 69 provided.
In my email conversations with Craig, I mentioned the fact I was looking for a fuzz. He told me in addition to his other pedals, he also hand wires several versions of Fuzz tones. From his descriptions, I figured his FabFuzz would best fit my needs. He uses had picked NOS British AC128 germaniums for this pedal and his attention to detail really comes through.
The FabFuzz turned out to be a very versitile fuzz pedal with lot's of tones and lot's of gain on tap. From Trower to Hendrix to Spirit in the sky. It also works well run before my Vox Valve Tone or Marsahall BluesBreaker. The thing to remeber with fuzz pedals of this ilk is they like to be run before true by-pass pedals. Also, an old carbon zinc battery works best over the studlier alkaline modles.
For $65.00, I could not be happier. This pedal puts many $125-$150 fuzz pedals to shame. While perhaps not as versitile or downright lardacious as the fore mentioned 69 pedal, the fabfuzz has nothing to hang it's head about. The fact that it costs less than half of a used 69 is a huge bonus.
So, once again...if you're in the market for a cost effective, hand wired, toneful fuzz, give Craig at www.awendamusic.com a shout and see if you find something you like.
I'm looking forward to trying his overdrive and trem next.
