Well, I'd been searching for the right Telecaster for 2 years. Highway 1 Teles were the closest to what I liked in a Fender. Sadly, the electrical power at church is horrid. The power for guitar amplifiers is shared with the electric pump for the baptismal and the lighting dimmers. So, single coil guitars are out of the question because they make guitars hum like a bucket of bumble bees. I'd been playing Gibsons and an Ibanez, until last night...

I got a nice price from GC on a natural ash 72 Thinline RI with humbuckers! It's clean tone has plenty of tele twang, good jazz tone with the tone rolled back and good OD and distorted tones, thanks to the " Fender wide range" humbuckers. I was worried that the 7.25" radius neck would choke during string bending but that is not the case. I can bend a whole step without a not choaking out. With distortion, I can still cop my favorite ZZ Top type of tone. It's not fat, like a Les Paul. It's more like my SG. I'll post more reports when the honey moon phase is over.

Anyone else own one?

I don't own one, but the other guitarist in our band owns one. I love the sound (and looks) of these guitars, but our producer didn't. He suggested changing the pickups to custom shop pickups or actual 70s pickups. When recorded, the pickups had a sort of scooped mid sound that sounded somewhat annoying and plunky--kind of dead. They just didn't record well--but I know quite a few bands use these guitars regularly. It's a total shame to me, because I love the sound of the neck pickup through a twin set clean with the reverb on 5 and a slow throbbing vibrato--pure magic....

I want one... but I want a lot of things  How do you like the 7 1/4" radius? I've never played one....

The neck is fat and the 7.25"radius is very comfy. The notes can choke out a little if you bend over a whole step. I don't do that very often. The extra mass of neck wood gives it a good "woody" tone. A local store had an original 72 Thinline a couple of years back. This MIM neck has a better feel.

Today I was at the music store and saw a Squier Tele with P-90's in it. It's really cheap- I think the out the door price was $268.00. I played it for a few minutes. I think that with a decent setup it could be a whole bunch of fun.
