I'm like a giddy little kid.........

I just bought a LesPaul Faded P90 double cutaway (with FAT neck) here locally for an insanely LOW price....TV YELLOW, too!!

Said dealer had two- one walnut and one TV yellow. Though I like the TV yellow better, I was prepared to buy either based on superior acoustic tone alone. Both were great, and both had fat 50's necks.

But the TV Yellow had more 'RING' to it... I bought it.

I may go back and get the other one tomorrow (based on the price alone)

This store was trying to cultivate a Gibson dealership, so Gibson sold the store a small initial order to get their feet wet....then told the store if they wanted to retain the Gibson line they had to buy a ridiculous amt of gear (like about a quarter mil $ don't ya just love Henry J?) so the store walked out on Gibson.

YEAH BABY!!!

I had one of those!
Killer axes! Like a Tele on steroids.

I really like P-90's. Had one on a TV yellow new model Melody Maker too, but it wasn't adjustable like those soapbars.

Finally, I got into a used USA Hamer Special, before going back to Tele's, and now my Squire 51, which isn't very beefy like a P-90, but it was CHEAP!

P-90's seem to get a bad rap. Some, ( who have used them ) seem to think they are rude, crude and lude pickups. While they certainly are capable of corpulet tones, the real beauty lies in their inherent sweetness. Much like a great strat/tele pup, they excude a sweet, complex, harmonic nature when played clean. Apply some overdrive and "Stand Back!!"

I'm a long time P-90 user. My first good electric ( 57 Les Paul Special inherited from my uncle in 1969 ) first introduced me to the wonderful P-90. Throughout the years, ( in addition to my other guitars ) I always seemd to have at least one P-90 equipped axe. Most recent is a Peavey Firenza I picked up quite cheap. My fist thought was to replace the stock P-90's with Lollars ( my favorite P-90's ) or Stephens. After playing this guitar for a while, I came to appreciate the beautiful sounding stock pickups. Also, a P-90 in the neck of a tele is tone bliss. I'm glad to see the recent return to P-90's. The Gibson P-94, Stephens Kay-Bar, SK H-90, et al make it easy to try out P-90's in a humbucking guitar. The only problem is...once you try them, you may not go back!

Yeah!! What pushed me over the edge was after listening to my R8's very nice PAF clones, and others, very carefully and wanting a particular explosiveness, bite and slight midrange ratty-ness of one of my favorite players that the PAF's just can't seem to cop.

I found out that his "secret weapon" in the studio is a P90 equipped guitar; he used one live years ago, and doesn't anymore. Knowing many P90 fans, I answered the simple equation in my own mind, and dove in the pool. Yep, that's the sound.

It's funny how a $700 guitar can compete for "1st chair" against my Historic 58' LesPaul (which went for over 6x the price) , and be regarded as a contender. This guitar is da-bomb!!

It's also amazing how many hats the P90's can wear, and wear WELL. They won't totally replace my PAF's, but they have earned my respect and admiration.

As I have no idea of the quality level of the stock Gibson's in this guitar, at some point in the future I might upgrade to either Lollars or HighOrder handwounds.

Would you like a BIB, my good man?

Don't get me wrong, it's NOT a historic by any means, but it's still a great guitar.

You know, there's one thing I've noticed with this guitar. Word is that Gibson had moved back the neck p'up for more structural integrity with the neck joint, but, unlike 24 fret humbucker guitars with the p'up in the same location, it doesn't seem to negatively affect the richness of the neck pickup at all. If anything, perhaps it's helped the P90's elocution somewhat, as I hear that the neck P90 can get a tad muddy on a LP, or a LP Jr. This one is nice and clear, but still very 'rich'.

Don't laugh...well ok, you can laugh all you want! Got an MIJ Tele body that I installed and then removed the Bigsby, so the body looks hacked. The bridge pickup is a Harmonic Design S90, a P90 in a Tele bridge pup size. Very cool and sweet when matched with the Gibson mini-bucker in the neck. Sounds like a weird combination but it seems to work really well. I've always seemed to like P90s for certain things.

A bucket and a mop should suffice!

Yeah, I know it aint a historic, or vintage piece, but those old Gibson styles are just sooo sweet!

I used to own a real 59 Double Cutaway LP Jr., and it ranks as my 2nd favorite guitar of all time! I loved the feel of the neck, and it sustained forever! The P90 was awesome in it.

Sadly, it was turned into a pile of splinters by a drunk driver, who smashed into my parked car at over 100 mph. Basically the trunk of my 69 Dodge Coronet was shoved up into the glove box. Thats where the remains of the case, and what I could identify as my guitar where.

Now my wife things I'm too precious ( :crazy ) about my guitar, cause I wont let it ride in the trunk, I just tell here, I dont want her to see me cry like a big baby if it were to happen again!

Yes, I kick myself to this day for ever letting it go. About 20 years ago, I picked up a reissue LP Special, but it wasnt the same. Something about those 50's P-90's and neck that just made it a part of me.

Brad, I know of which reissues you speak, and the new ones, including the historics, are VERY cool. The ones you speak of weren't so hot...
