I think that the old late '50s and early '60s Melody Makers had some of the greatest necks Gibson has ever made. I've got a double cut that I installed two P-90s in (it was a basket case to begin with),yet this configuration is subject to change.
It's kinda like playing a Junior that's been on the Atkin's diet.
Anyone else play one?

I remember in the 70's seriously coveting those ones that Pat Travers used. They were routed for full-size humbuckers and they just screamed.

I've had the recent one with the tune-o-matic and the P-90 (and the cheap finish). Pretty good, but felt a bit unfinished (not in a good way), and crude, and the P-90 wound up a bit too far from the strings for my liking.
The LP juniors I've seen had less neck angle to the body, and the strings were at the right distance from the pu for a good walloping signal.
Nothing a few washers or a spacer couldn't cure, but I offed it for a USA Hamer Special that was much better (before going completely back to Tele's)! 8)

That's too bad about the Melody maker---I've heard some good things about them. One of the downsides about P-90 pups is that they aren't very forgiving in the height adjustment dept.
The Hamer Special is two P-90s,right? A couple of my friends have them, and they are 100% ok with me----nice neck radius!

It wasn't a bad guitar. Had THE sound. Just wanted more wallop.
Yes, the Hamer originally had Seymour Duncan P-90 soapbars (height adjustable), but a previous owner retrofitted Dimarzio "soapbars," which were humbucking, but fit exactly and sounded great. There was very little difference in the sound between the Dimarzios and P-90's. They were just a touch less smooth. Sounded like ceramic magnets to me, otherwise they were very P-90 sounding.
Yes, the neck was sweet! A thin '60's profile LP style. Best neck I think I ever owned next to a '93 LP Jr I had once.
I can get used to any neck, but the Hamer was especially precision. 8)
