You could put some heavy gauge strings on a Tele or something and tune it down an octave.
But seriously....
I looked into 6-stringers briefly about a year ago. The Warwick Thumb is pretty good if you're looking for high quality. It's a little on the high side price-wise for us average people on a budget. I'd probably look more at the Warwick Corvette if I was looking for a 6-string. Most of the major manufacturers have 6-string models, including Fender (custom shop). Yamaha and Schecter have some affordable models that aren't too bad.
Hope my vast inexperience with 6-string basses helps. Maybe someone else here has better info.
Why do you need a 6-string?

I was trying to remember and I think it is Stuart or maybe its Stewart? basses that came to mind first. I agree about quality in a major way. If you want a decent 6 you are going to have to shell out the duckets for one. There are way too many 6's out there that are just made as a product line enhancement rather than an actual usable instrument. Most of them are just junk. (imho) I guess the bottom line is you get what you pay for.
On the other hand, I have that dynabass 5 string and although it is a low end guitar, the action is awesome and I can upgrade the electronics. So if you go low end, just get something you know you can work with, and later on upgrade.
I will ask a couple of really good bass players this week and see what their response is and get back to you on this.

This reply may be a little too late but what are you willing to pay? Bolt-on or neck-through? 34 or 35 inch scale? Fretted or fretless? ;)
