What would the guitar of your dreams look like? What qualities should it have? I mean we all have our fav guitars, but if you could pick, mix and match a complete dream axe, what would it be?

If I had to pick one it would probably be "Nadine". She's a '61 Strat, Dakota Red, and sounded so beyond any Strat I've ever played (which is a lot), her tone still rings in my memory. I played her through my first '63 AC30 (shown in the pix w/ my Seafoam Green Strat), and the combination was inspiring.

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2001-12/6752/SFGreen,Nadine63AC.jpg

I have to mention my 2nd choice. If Nadine weren't available, this '59 Burst I'm holding would be my prime choice. The dopy love-struck look on my face - not to mention the gaze in Patrick Robinson's eyes (to the right) about says it all. It had a wonderful light airy quality to it as well as the sweetest warm PAF-meets-mahagony tones I've ever heard from an LP. Though I'm primarily a Strat player, this LP had such wonderful sweet tone it could easily satisfy my pretty-'n-punchy taste requirement. The guitar is a 100% original '59 LP owned by Glen Kuykendall, a Nashville studio player.

I'm putting together a Parts-o-Tele right now:

Saga neck (rosewood board)
Alder body
SD Broadcaster bridge pu
Bill Lawrence neck pu
Ping deluxe (classic style) machines.

It ain't expensive, and I generally prefer ash/maple, and the bridge may go from six barrel to 3-brass ashtray (some things invariably need fine tuning when I build up a project).

I've had all my dream guitars. Now I just experiment with various Tele projects.
I've even had a Fender '52 RI, and was looking at another, when I decided to save some money and just keep nicking away with various parts until I developed a another winner (for me only, nobody else needs to like it/live with it) again.

I've owned more Gibsons than I care to count; 5 different Fender strats, 3 different Carvins; 2 Tom Andersons; 3 Hamers; 3 PRSi; Kramers, Charvels, and other assorted like axes; and so forth.

For solidbodies: To me, a certain 22-fret Mahogany glue-in neck/mahogany body/maple top guitar w/ rosewood fretboard & two PAF humbuckers about says it all... and none of the non-Gibsons of like configuration ever kept my attention.

I would like a bit better fret access on a LP in the higher registers, but that's about it. I am a very happy man.

Actually I prefer red BUT back when I was doing the Hair Band thing I used to drool over the Carvin Catalogs and could never make up my mind between the DC400,Ultra v and the X220.The only colors available in a flame top at that time were the Cherry sunburst ,natural ,Green and the Blue.I eventually got the Blue DC200 in flame first and then the Ultra V now I want the third of the triogy in the X220C.The Blue DC200 is the one that converted me from Gibsons as the Showcase Gibsons I had came apart on the road (necks warped finish cracked at less than 2 years old ect)but the Carvin not only held up then but still is in NICE shape. Gibsons Customer Service ( I worked for a dealer)is a NIGHTMARE to deal with and reamed me badly while Carvin was quite helpfull and has the best in the Industry. Here is my Carvin Musieum site for the full collection http://www.carvinmuseum.com/collections/rutledri.html

Rutledri-

Believe me, many of the Gibsons I've owned over the years I no longer have for obvious reasons! :D They weren't so great!! But a few of them were incredible. Of the latter, I still own two.

I broke an over 14-year boycott of Gibson to buy my 2001 '58 Reissue. The ONLY reason was, because after trying every other iteration of similar construction to a LP std., the '58 I bought has THE sound for me. I went back to Gibson kicking and screaming after over 14 years of near-exclusive PRS use (the exception being Tom Anderson Guitars for strat-hybrid stuff)

I've had two V220's and one DC137 (model? Offset cutaway, reverse headstock, single pickup, maple F/B.) I personally don't find the Ebony F/B that Carvin seems bent on as part of 'my sound' for tone, but there are a few exceptions to this. If Carvin would use a rosewood F/B, and glue-in 22 fret necks (rather than neck-through 24 fret jobbies) they probably would have my undivided attention. Having owned many neck-through guitars (and others than Carvin) they just never 'did it' for me. I have no idea as to why. I sure wanted them to.

Carvin's workmanship is top-notch. From Carvin, I would also want Mahog neck and back, maple top, rosewood F/B, choice of neck profiles (no shredder necks- grin!), and the ability to spec a guitar with more neck angle than they commonly use.

What I have found is that nothing does a great LP tone, like a great LP. And that's what does it for me. Part of the factor is neck and headstock angle, and possibly some trade-mojo thrown into the equation.

Ultimately, whatever works for the particular player is all that's important, no matter what the brand or model of guitar being used.

I would love to own another Carvin, and like it enough to keep it as a regular 'player'.

Crunchyriff I take it you haven`t looked at Carvins in a while  ! CT6 man 22 fret glue in neck is standard and Rosewood boards AND STAINLESS frets are options .Mahogany neck and body is standard with a Flame top and headstock check this one out that is an in-stock guitar the link is at the end of this post  !The tops on the ones I have seen are SPECTACULAR and the standard top on a CT6 is equal to a Private stock PRS at less than HALF the money(under $1500 for the one in the link with case to your door!)!! WARNING if you love PRS and get a chance to see and play a CT6 you will probably forget PRS jump ship and buy the Carvin    !http://www.carvin.com/guitars-in-stock/big/87359b.jpg

rutledri-

Well I was certainly an avid/staunch PRS user. But no more I already jumped ship. Of the three I owned, I still have #1.. sold my '87 Metal Special, and '90 Signature Custom (in Whale Blue) years ago. The PRS I kept is incredible, and I used it for many years on stage and in studio, but I retired it a few years ago (and it still looks relatively new). I just got away from 24-fret guitars entirely because I don't like the way the neck pickup sounds in 24 fret guitars in general. (Nick has heard this story countless times.... )

I won't waste bandwidth here, but I wrote about this quite a bit over at the LesPaulForum, & PlexiPalace forums over the years. It all about physics, and the aspect of neck pickup placement in relation to distance from the bridge..but I digress.

Anyway, after spending about 3 years playing different 22-fret PRS models in my search to replace my '88 Custom, I finally gave up on them..with much reluctance.

Thanks for the link! Yeah, I've seen those before, and I have a like-dislike thing for them. Obviously, they look great, but OTOH, too similar to a PRS.
Hmmm.....we'll see. They DO look nice.

Right now the last thing I honestly need is 'another guitar'...I've been downsizing my 'toolbox', and sold 3 of my electrics over the last 10-12 months (two Hamers and an ESP VintagePlus). If they aren't a necessary part of my tools, off they go. I just can't afford to 'collect' at this point in time, and I'm gingerly holding onto my '88 PRS because right now it's worth more than I paid for it new in 1988. I'm a player, not a collector.

Sooo, I have another straggler or two to sell yet. My 'massive collection' days are over. Having 20-30 or more guitars sounds real cool...until you actually have them. Then you have storage issues, oodles of string sets, and mucho upkeep...especially if they don't get played much. You would think it would be the opposite, but I have found that guitars that just sit around unplayed for months end up having more funky upkeep "issues" than the ones you regularly play. Don't ask me why... it just seems you have to dote over them more. Back in the late 80's I had between 25-30 guitars...what a mess. Got rid of most of em, and recently had the fleet up to over 10 guitars looking for the 'right sound'...not good for me.

My 'guitar voice' is pretty much in what I am playing currently- the '58 Historic RI LesPaul, an '80 Howard Roberts Fusion...and a '92 Tom Anderson Drop Top. That pretty much covers all the bases for me, and when I need a Tele, I have a cheep $110 Chinese Tele-clone that actually does a fine job...for what it is. (Someday maybe a Nocaster for me!!)

Hmm....maybe someday a Carvin will be in the toolbox! :?:

Well, right now I play a Fender Prodigy ('90 I think). I modified it to have two tone and volume knob. Also I added a strat style jack plate, so it looks more like a strat thant the prodigy. This guitar was Fenders entrance into the "Super Strat" models to compete with Ibanez and Carvin. From what I've been able to find out the guitar was only made for a couple of years (now I feel bad about modifiying it..oh well). For my dream guitar it would be this one...or at least play and have the same "feel" as this one. The guitar rings like a bell and I can get tones from Hendrix to Via and almost anything in between from it. I have to admit this is one versitle guitar for me. I have often wondered if I could build a guitar with the same qualities.

So my ultimate guitar would be a Mahogany LP (maple top) with a Fender Prodigy kneck (maple with rosewood fb) with a 12" radius. SD pups with push-pull pots that allowed me to switch from single to humbucker and in-out phase. Also I would have a LR Baggs pizo bridge for the "acoustic" sound. With this I think I could get the warm tone of a LP and the blusy thinner tones of a strat.

I've been blessed to have some great ones.
Even though I am moving in a vintage direction..(just got a Tele) For pure versatility nothing beats the Parker Fly Deluxe I had.

At the Epic church we go from Keith Urban country to Switchfoot to Clapton to Joan Jett to Fleetwood Mac. They are big on seamless transitions so guitar changes are out most of the time.
The Parker was great in this setting.
I guess a mahogany Fly classic would qualify as my dream guitar right now stictly from a practical perspective.

I don't know what my "dream guitar" would be. I've had several imagined ones in the past, then after I got them I realized they were just something I wanted, and not necessarily something I needed, and was greatly disappointed. Alot of guitars look great, but once I've put them in my hands they don't don't feel like a musical instrument to me, for lack of a better way to describe it. On the other hand, I've picked up some of the most mundane looking guitars and instantly liked how they felt and how they sounded. It's easy to fall into the trap of going after guitars like trophies. I'm definitely guilty as charged.

As far as solid bodies, I'm very content with a Strat style guitar as for me they are still the most comfortable to play. And I like semi-hollows (I used to always call them semi-acoustics). I've got a couple of Fender Strats and an Ibanez semi-hollow AS-200, plus an Ibanez SZ320MH to bridge the gap between these two types of guitars. I've got a few more, I'm embarrassed to say, and I'm very I'm happy with what I have.

Well, I'm lucky enough to have a "few" guitars of my dreams.....and some that are not dreams, but pretty cool. After I quit gigging in 1990, I pretty much stopped playing for the next 10 years. I had pretty much sold all the nice guitars I had accumulated over the years and was down to a Tokai strat and an acoustic.

When I got back into playing, ( thank you Lord! ) I decided I wanted something different and decided to semi-retire my old trusty strat and build a nice tele. Using a chambered USACG mahogany body and USACG neck built to my specs, I now have a guitar I dearly love. It plays like an absolute dream and sounds so beautifuly sweet.

Then, I lucked into a few vintage pieces. I had always wanted another semi-hollow due to the fond memories I had of my old Guild Starfires and ibanez AS200. I was blessed to find a very nice 1967 ES-335 and a pristine, stock 1971 Tele for an incredible deal. There were about a half dozen other guitars and a few amps that came along in the deal.

I'm having a fella from the TDPRI build me a semi-hollow ( mahogany, one F hole, Tele / LP hybrid shape ) 2 bucker guitar. It should be done in the next few days, so I'm really looking forward to this one.

I see incredilbe, beautiful guitars all the time, ( Thorns, Soloway, et cet ) but I must say, I am a very happy man with what I currently have.

The 71 tele and 67 335 are being saved for my Grandsons. I'm seriously thinking of selling everything else but the grandkids guitars, the tele, my Larrivee acoustic and the new electric. I just don't play the others and I hate to see guitars sitting in their cases. They need to be played!!

I wish I was not so ignorant in posting pics, or I'd throw a few up here. The Moore pickups I had hand wound for this gutiar are ( according to Kevin ) exactly what I hoped for. Yes! I deliberately used that photo to see if anyone would know what it was.

Notice the one piece body! I've been looking for another for about 5 years and have only seen one other one piece body but it was in Australia. I should've gone ahead and paid to have it shipped over here to the US.

Anyway, you can get a wide variety of tone from these.

Hi Stephen,Anyway, you can get a wide variety of tone from these.

Yeah, and it plays better than the best LP I have ever played too! Light in weight, and action that is so insanely low and sweet without a hint of frett buzz, and once you get down the 6 way selector, the sky is the limit on your tone!

Got to admit I never saw a natural finish one before, thats a first for me.

I'm currently in love with my Fender 72 Tele Custom RI (the MIJ neck is a thing of beauty). I would like to mod it though; new pickups, master volume, and coil tap, perhaps a bigsby.

As for acoustics; perhaps a Martin D-18V or Taylor 510 (with 1 11/16" nut), although my Taylor 110 (with Fishman Matrix I) is doing just fine for me.

yet another would be a surf green Vinetto.

I know it isn't a $3000 Gibson or Fender or whatever... but this here is a guitar I've wanted for a couple of years...

Things worked out and I finally got me one. SWEET!

I never had a chance to reply to this one, so I will now. :-)

I've always loved strat tones, but hated Fender necks, so I found my perfect guitar in my Carvin Bolt. I do find the C22 in the bridge to be a bit bright for my taste sometimes, so I may make a change there. Also, the AP11 single coils have fantastic tones, but they buzz horribly at church when the spot lights are engaged(I think it's the dimmer packs), so I might just get a different pickguard and load it up with some Bill Lawrence pickups and Carvin hardware, and swap it with my current one to keep it intact in case we ever get this new church built, and have a good lighting system where the AP11's won't buzz like crazy. That way I can switch pickguards fully assembled and just solder the input jacks without having to do a bunch of screw turning and soldering pups and whatnot.

But I do love my Bolt!

Right now I am going in a different direction. I really want a larrivee rosewoood parlor guitar. I sold one of the satin models a few years back and it is the only guitar I wish I had back. If you drop a rare earth humbucker in one of those it gives a real warm sound. Plus it is the best guitar in the world to sit on the couch and play at night.

Boy, that's a hard one. For one thing, I'm sure there are some incredible boutique guitars out there I know nothing about, so I wouldn't even be able to make an informed decision at this point.

For acoustic, I'm pretty sure I'd get a Manzer...made by Canadian luthier Linda Manzer who apprenticed under Larrivee, I believe. She's not even taking orders at the moment and there's no pricing information, but a couple years ago prices started around $4500...I'm sure it's more by now. Bruce Cockburn, Pat Metheny and Stephen Fearing are among the artists who play her guitars.

For electric it's hard. Forgetting all the possible boutique guitars out there for the moment, I would imagine it would be a Custom Shop model of either a Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul. If not a true Custom, then perhaps the Eric Johnson Signature Strat or the Neal Schon Signature Les Paul...or BOTH!!!

You know, if we were talking a true "dream" guitar. I would have to have a guitar that sounds like a great strat in the neck pickups, and a Les Paul on the bridge pups. That would be a true "dream" guitar for me!

I've got plenty of dreams. Some of you know about my lust for a walnut 335, and a 60s southen jumbo or hummingbird.

But right now I'm jonesin' for a doublebound sunburst tele, with a '52 reissue neck (not too yellow, please), a good strong, bluesy pup in the bridge and a PAF in the neck.

One of my guitar regrets Dave is a '66 Walnut 335 in mint condition that came through the store I was working at in Nampa when the wife and I were at NNU. I had a supposedly good luthier in Boise put in a stop tailpiece in place of the trapeze. He got it off center!!! When you looked in the top 'f' hole you could see part of the tailpiece stud hanging out of the center block. It never did play or sound right.

That is just ... so ... sad.... :(
