I have been trying to stretch myself quite a bit and pick up lots of new stuff. Among the tabs and songsbooks all over my office:

Traditional Christmas songs...also trying to help my daughter (8) learn the melodies on a casio keyboard...fun and mostly easy.

Van Halen: Panama (note: I don't actually listen to non-christian music anymore, but have always loved EVH's fretwork...this is classic Eddie)

Joe Satriani: The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing (this guy is completely amazing to me...listen to this song, there is an Am11 one-handed arpeggio riff that will literally blow your mind - and your fingers if you can do it. I can't do that part smoothly, much less quickly, yet.)

As always, Blues and modal improvisation practice.

Someday I may actually sound good!

Well, I always keep my ear open for new P&W, and I mostly pick things up by ear.

But I also find myself checkin out all sorts of blues, and blues rock.

So many things goin on in my head right now, I wish I could give an example or two, but I'm just drawin a blank!

The last one we learned was this one http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Members/000145589_000023949.mp3 Waid whipped it out in a chord sheet just before we started our service we blew straight through it once in practice and then just flew by the seat of our paints (as usuall  it`s allways an adventure  ).I record our sets on my little MiniDisk Walkman with a cheap condensor mic on the front row .

I play for an alternative evening service. I'm having a blast learning stuff that's outside the normal P&W vein. We recently played Higher by Hoobastank and Away From the Son by Switchfoot. It's a hoot since I'm an old Phil Keaggy, Love Song, The Way, type geezer.

Is in Db every week with 3 up beat traditional songs from "down home". Currently we are working on Richard Smallwood's Total Praise, Glen Burliegh's Order My Steps for long range practice, an upbeat funk inspired tune called Bless the Lord (Oh, My Soul).

For my personal musical growth I am pretending that I can learn Jazz so I have started working out various chord phrases for Autumn Leaves, My Favorite Things and Tenderly.

No rush on any of it, I have the rest of this life and all of eternity to keep on trying.

Peter I love combining P & W with my love for jazz harmony. I just did an solo arrangement of 'His Eye is on the Sparrow' for an offeratory. I enjoy it but I am really slow at putting arrangements together.

Cool!
Yeah it takes awhile for me to hear the chords right. I usually have a few bogus substitutions because I didn't know what I was doing.
Old 1-4-5 hymns are a LOT easier, especially in the key of C.

Here is a Hillsong song we learned in one pass this morning(got chord sheets of course  I had never heard the song listened to it ONCE and then played it for service on the fly). The Ends Of The Earth http://www.digitalsoundplanet.com/Members/000145589_000024581.mp3 .If we ever get a chance to really practice and get settled somewhere where we can get together and really work things out (our church disbanded some months ago so right now we are working as hired guns doing interum stuff conferences and fill ins as a team) we might just turn in to a pretty good band!!As of now we just wing it and get lost in HIS presence a good place ta get lost in  !After this we got off into a long prophetic jam and it lasted over an hour fun stuff!!We are working now with a Church in Talladega by the race track as an interum team after the pastor (who was a friend and also lead worship) left. Another friend of ours has applied for the pastorate and wants us there as the praise team 8) . Please pray for the Lords will here as it would be nice to keep this group together and actually have a home!!

We're working on All in All, right now. Sounds like it needs to be fingerpicked to me, but the singers slow it way down. :banghead

Hmm - these aren't exactly P&W songs, but my guitar teacher has me working on them to learn some techniques (mostly how to work horn section leads out on guitar)...

Asleep At The Wheel (Country Swing band)
Route 66
Choo Choo Cha'Boogie

Then on my own:
FFH songs (from their first four CDs)
Joe Satriani (early work - yikes he is good)
Frank Gambale "Speed Picking and Monster Licks" (fusion style)
Improvisation over typical blues progressions

I like to fingerpick on that one too. I used to fingerpick on a lot of songs, but I have just about stopped altogether during the service. With just me and a piano, chord strumming just seems to work better most of the time now.

We are working on Third Day's "Take my life" off the Offerings 2 CD.
Hope to have it ready for next weekend.

I think this is a great thread to keep going. I am always looking for our next song. This gives a lot of ideas.
I think it might even be a good idea to list what instruments are being used? I mean type, not "brand"?

Normally we only use one instrument, one poorly played acoustic, mine.
That's what we are doing with this song.

Yes, with an ensemble it doesn't work as well because of the feel, I find.

For instruments we have:
Two guitars; piano; bass; drums; sometimes harmonica.
Four vocalists.

In the past we also had some saxophones too, but they moved on.

Of the eight or nine songs in our Sunday night service usually two are new and have a special tie in to the message.
This week it's NewBoys 'Shine' and Edgar Winter's 'Free Ride'.
Quite a contrast, from flanged pop to Rick Derringer style rock.

The new one we're workin' on this week is "All Things New" by Steven Curtis Chapman. I like it a lot, it rocks, but has a lot of dynamic changes.

And one we just learned a month or two ago, but I'm still trying to polish up the lead on is "Let the Praises Ring" by Lincoln Brewster. That one rocks, too!

The solo in that Brewster tune is incredibly cool. He's an amazing player.

Yeah, I love that one. We learned it last month. On different weekends, we have done the Celtic break in the middle on either keyboard, or flute. Nice tune!

We're learning songs from John Ragsdale's cd...Thirst For You, To Worship You, No God Like Our God, Your Throne, for Wednesday's. Most of our Sunday worship is from Hillsong. Recent additions include: Made Me Glad, With All I Am, God Is Great, & One Way.

That's cool, Les. We did "Made Me Glad" tonight, and have done "God is Great" for a while now. With that one, we had a hard time with the differing range between the chorus and verse, so we change keys between the two, and then back again, so the vocalists (and the congregation) can sing it easier. Kinda made it our own version.

We learned "One Way" last month, and that is a fun song to do too. Youse guys have good taste (IMHO).

Lincoln Brewster is one of the few Christian guitar players (let alone any of the younger, newer faces) that I admire.
His work with Steve Perry was stellar. Kid's got great chops AND feel.

There's a song on his first solo project called "He's All I Need" with a solo that's a real jaw-dropper.

I was pretty bummed a few years ago because he did a free lunchtime concert at the mall here, and I had to work. I heard several people talking about the fact that there was genuine, heart-felt worship happening right there in the food court.

Yes, he does! I just got his CD at a worship seminar here in my town.

Say Crunchy, have you ever checked out Tommy Walker? That dude has some major chops and is an annointed singer, writer, and leader as well. Recommended listening...

Great song! I occassionally sugest it as a possibility to add to the list.

Crunchy, you said a mouthfull! Lincoln Brewster is one of the hottest guitarist any where! he aint limited to just CCM in that category! He pulls off the balancing act of utilizing shred, blues, a touch of jazz, with a little new-wave flavor to boot! Basically, in my book, he shows Prince (or is it tha artist formelry known as prince?) how its really done, and Prince aint a schlub on guitar!

Our special song for Sunday evening Service didn't show.
Me and one of the singers did "Wonderful Maker" (Redman and Tomlin)
at the last minute. We normally keep one in our pocket for just this very thing, but we had used everything up. We normally do this song with a small group of us, it was different with just two.
Great song, I know I don't do it justice.
