View Full Version : One, more or many?

I have read stories about guitarists who had like one main guitar throughout their entire career. For decades they kept playing and rocking and a twanging on the same ole board. Ok, I admit, I have a lot of guitars. I love guitars, but it made me think. Maybe a couple of guitars will be enough? So here I am in the process of thinning down my herd of guitars. I know it is shocking news, but some guitars just don’t cut it as parts of my guitar flock. Some were given to me by well meaning people; others were bought in the heat of the moment. I had to figure out which one of them can go, so I sat down and made a list.

1. Telecaster (I need at least 3, one standard, 1 with dual buckers with split, and one with Nashville setup and hey maybe 1 with a Bigsby)

2. Strat (I need at least 2 of them, u know one with that classical strat sound and one with a bit more spunk)

3. Les Paul (I have to keep the LP Special, it is a decent little axe, but I really could use one of those cool ones in Alpine white with gold hardware too, I bet Mrs. Viking would like that one)

4. Jazzbox (Well I have 3 and they are all keepers. 1 Schecter, 1 Tanglewood and 1 HB, I mean they all have their own personality and sound, when I come to think of it, I used to have a JT that played like a ring of a bell too, maybe I have to buy that one back)

5. Acoustic (Ooooh that is a though choice I am definitely keeping my Hagstrom and the Schecter. The hand built Fangell from 1939 is a keeper too, the Telecoustic could go, but I got that so cheap, I’ll keep it. Then of course I need a couple of classical for the nice Latin work

As I make this list I realize, that the only guitars I have that really doesn’t cut it, are the ones in the “metal axe” category. Here is a nice thought; I think I will sell those so I can get the Tele with a Bigsby, the Alpine white Les Paul and maybe a new acoustic or two. Strange this, I just came to realize I do really need one of them Gibson Lucille’s too. It would look so cool on the wall next to the Alpine white Les Paul. So life goes on, a couple of metal axes bite the dust and some new guitars will replace them, and I have some serious bribing to do so Mrs. Viking wont file a divorce.

(wife) But you can only play one at a time!
(husband) But you can only wear one pair of shoes at a time.

That discussion does not work with my wife. She is very frugel and stays away from those fashion traps that many women fall into.

Gee, as I was reading your list, I was wondering how you could ever part with any of your guitars. I noticed that you obscurely listed your cullings at the end of the list in one lump sum catagory - metal axes.

When I was a kid, all I had was a Les Paul Custom and a '70 Marshall SLP (100W) head with a 1960A Basketweave cabinet. I didn't even keep a good acoustic around at the time. I figured that rig was all a person could ever need (boy was I STUPID!). Then, I leaned into playing keyboards far more than guitar. This is where my G.A.S. pains started in the early '80's.

Now, I have:

3 Strats (MIA LE, MIM, and EC)
2 Teles (50's Classic, Deluxe ash)
1 Les Paul Standard LE
1 PRS Custom 24
1 Guild acoustic (rare gift from my parents - never sell)
1 Big Baby Taylor (for sale)
1 Jazz Bass (Squire MIM)
2 Mandolins (1 Fender electric, 1 cheap Flatiron)
2 Marshall heads (1987X RI, '79 JMP - both 50W)
3 Marshall cabinets (1960AC, 1922, 1965B)
1 Blues Deluxe in tweed
1 Dr Z Maz 18 Jr.
1 Peavey Classic 50
1 Roland TD-10 drum set (Session)
3 keyboards (QS7, SP88, XK-2)
2 Digital recorders (Tascam 2488, Roland VS-880)
2 JBL speakers
2 KRK near field monitors
1 Alto Sax (1948 The Martin Alto)
10 Harmonicas
TONS of rack gear and microphones

Sometimes I begin to wonder if I should thin out my stuff. But then, I break out into a cold sweat just thinking about it. I just recently sold my Taylor 355 12 string and it nearly killed me. But I have to keep my promise to my dear and barely understanding wife.

I need to sell one of the Marshall cabinets and the Big Baby Taylor to make way for what I might want to buy in 2005 (yes, we have to plan for these things, it is not always just impulse buying). I would like to sell another guitar, but there are none that I can part with.

So the potential additions/replacements to my list of guitars/amps:

ES-335
Les Paul Mahongany
Les Paul R8
Variax 700
Parker Fly
Marshall JTM45
Marshall 1959X or original
Marshall 1974X (or clone)
Vetta II Combo
BLues Jr.
Hammond XK-3
Tenor Sax

Hmmm. It is looking like I need a bigger house again  .

Hmmm...

I'm just a hobby player (mostly to relax and just have fun with other Christians). I also have a fairly strong conviction about being "excessive" with worldly material stuff (Like all people, I struggle with turning my "wanter" off, but manage most of the time).

Therefore my gear is pretty simple and minimalist:
--50th Anniv. American Strat (HSS, S-1)
--Ovation S771 Acoustic
--Fender Blues Jr.
--Crate GFX15 (tiny practice amp)
--Digitech GNX4 (pedalboard)
--Korg AX1500G (pedalboard - for sale)

I would like a semi-hollow body with tapped humbuckers and a piezo system as my primary guitar (though I like my strat a LOT).
Two that I am looking at:
Rowan Montara $4500 (but I do work for him and can get one for MUCH lower!) (http://www.rowanguitars.com/montara.htm)
Schecter C-1/SH $699ish (I love the 14" radius neck - very easy for me to play.) (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/518184/)

And perhaps another Blonde Blues Jr. so I can run in stereo (but I don't really need to)...

Still - what I have now works great, and I have no friction with my beloved wife (unless I start to beg  ).

Grace and peace,
~A~

Rather than make a list, here's a pic. (The Hamer on the far Left, and the ESP on the far Right have recently been sold.)

Great picture.

Unfortunately, the only way to get all of my stuff in a single picture is to either pile on top of each other of take it outside so far away, that you couldn't see what was in the picture. :?

LOL Rev...

I could always get a Fish-Eye converter for my digital camera and take a shot of that whole room of gear! ;)

OOO - also... I'd like an ES-335, Variax 700 (trem) and/or a Lucille and a 12-string acoustic... but those are so high priced I may as well forget they exist.

Sigh...

Welp,
I've had lotsa nice guitars, but usually only one at a time (I traded many for the guitar du-jour that winked at me).
But have pretty much settled now on a Telecaster, and a Martin pressed formica job with a piezo in it.
I play the Tele 99% of the time.

One amp: an Ampeg RI 50w one channel tuber.
I also keep a Boss ME-50 processor, but mostly use it as a headphone amp for couch noodling.

I can get anything I need from a simple Tele rig, and have played all sorts of jobs with it: Jazz, Showtunes and Pop standards, Blues, Country, Rock, Classic R&B, etc. for decades (read: old never-was geezer).
